Rebecca Thorman This Sunday, I had my best run yet, which I'm excited about. Part of my success, I think, is that I have weekend runs with my boyfriend who is much faster than I am. But as my mother says, his legs are twice my size! Anyway, having a running buddy helps me keep momentum/goals. And it makes me want such a person on the career side even more, but for some reason, I'm terrified of trying to find an "official" mentor. Have you all tried business coaches? Do you have a mentor? What's your feedback?

Going to him with questions is a great resource. My mentor is in the same industr as me which helps tremously. I also go to the same college as he went to. Not on purpose, but it is critical I think to helping your career.

Rebecca Thorman Do good managers step out of the way to lead their employees to success? This article in AdAge seems to argue just such a theory - http://bit.ly/9zHfNv - it talks about how the key to new product success is not having the boss be a part of your team. Are too many bosses just cautionary roadblocks?

Jay Goldman Giving tough criticism to sensitive people is... well... tough. What have you found that works? Is it better to do it in person or through an online message so they have time to react in private? Share your best story about your worst experience giving feedback so we can all learn from your past :)

Jay Goldman Gen Y sure loves its Feedback and Social Media. So why don't more Managers use SM to give their Gen Y employees feedback? Managers: have you thought about using all the great online tools to give kudos to your younger employees? Would you be comfortable bringing an outside tool to work to help your team kick ass? Gen Y: how would you respond to your manager sending you props via Twitter or LinkedIn or Brazen Careerist? What do you think?

If the praise is pretty general and not something that will wind up making other team members feel poorly, making me feel awkward (I've experienced that), I think witter or Brazen would be excellent. For LinkedIn, I would prefer formal written recommendations. It would be beyond weird for me if anyone attempted that for Facebook. Plus, social media makes it easy to reciprocate. Managers need praise right back...when they're getting it, they're more apt to give.
