Paige Holden Recently, I quit my job at a PR firm in NYC to take an internal communications position in DE. In addition to dealing with the life change (culture shock!), I'm finding the transition from agency life to client-side life challenging (and a little lonely when you aren't working with peers). Have any of you gone through a similar transition? Any tips for me?

I also moved to a very rural town in England and found the culture shock emmense.

Reading your comments you might find Marcus Buckinghams work and Stregthfinder 2.0 by Gallop useful. The message is somepeople just have strengths in certain areas, like agency side and weaknesses perhaps in client side. The work encourages you to do an audit on how you actually feel, perform etc. Some people need the cut and thrust of being outthere and I myself find somedays working at home a little less challenging.

We do need challenge at work!

Rebecca Thorman They say that productivity drops dramatically after the 4th of July until the beginning of September. (http://bit.ly/ba5Sm8) My company is actually revving up, but it's still difficult sometimes to get into the swing of things. I try to exercise and do as much possible outside so when I'm inside working I don't feel bad about missing the sun. How do you fight the summer productivity blahs?

I am more of a Winter person, so I get more productive in the Summer just because I do not like being out in the heat. When it is very cold in the Winter I stay inside as well. If it is between 30 and 50 is when I get less productive since that is when I want to be outside enjoying the weather.

Jessica Greekwood As I contemplate a job change and research job postings, I find myself drawn to jobs I would be passionate about but that would perhaps not pay me much more than I'm making now. But the whole purpose of looking for a new job is to make more money, right? If I had more money I could perhaps go on vacations and enjoy life a bit more. It makes me wonder: is it better to live to work OR work to live??

It's good you're not ignoring the money issue, but only focus on this to find a job that will pay you enough to take the issue of money off the table. As the same time, making sure it's a job that you have an interest in is great. If the role you're in is something you're passionate about, it's possible your situation won't be a polarisation of 'live to work or work to live', but will be a combination of the two that gives you the most important thing: satisfaction. hope that helps.

Rebecca Thorman So, here's a common story. A woman leaves her secure fancy-pants career on Wall St. to open an online clothing business. Are traditional careers taking a hit? If you were going to switch careers or start something new, what would you do? What if your boyfriend wanted to quit his job and start over — would it freak you out? Do you like to take risks? Or do you crave security?

@Jennifer - great point and one that none of us pointed out before, thank you.

My husband and I did something to 'combat' the issue of 'children', 'security', etc. BUT I was lucky enough to find out early on in my career that I was a risk taker / start up junkie. I believe the quote is, "proper planning prevents poor performance". Plan for your personality. So, knowing I'm a risk taker, we not only spent less and saved more when we were 'younger' (22-28), we also ensure that my husband (who is much more of a 'corporate' player) always has his job as well as a back up plan of somewhere he can go to make a steady salary.

I take the risks; and thus far they've paid off and when I was working (up until about 3 months ago) for start ups, I made far more $$$; and now consulting - it's very risky, but if anything happens - we have 2 savings accounts. 1 of which - we never touch and the other is "just in case" money. We plan to be pregnant this year, but have budgeted exactly what we 'think' we will need for a baby / child into each month and put that away.

Of course - this all sounds great in theory and when we actually do have 2 children ( ; things may be very different; but we're "trying" to plan...Nothing ever goes according to plan, but candidly, this is how I look at the situation. He makes 6 figures in his job and I make 6 figures / year consulting. If we can't make it work with those salaries, we probably need to re-evaluate / change our lifesytle.

If you have a family or don't know about the funds you have available then it might not be the right decision for you right then. I think saving and managing your money correctly when you are young especially has a huge impact on what you are able to do as well as the stability you will have in later life. However, you should always follow your dreams and if embarking on something like this is something that you really want to do then I think you should try whatever you have to in order to make it happen.

Coming into College I felt the same way about studying. I didn't have to do it H.S. so I did not know how once I hit the college scene. I'm thankful for my freshman seminar class where I was asked, "Does anyone have any questions before we end our 4 week session?" I raised my hand and humbly admitted that I did not know how to study. That made a huge difference, as they connected me to all kinds of resources.

Alyson Kilday Looking to set up our "Home & Business Base" overseas. We are setting up our ad agency to be location independent. The next question is where to be based in! We are considering Colombia or Arg as an option. Our requirements are: affordable, relatively safe, rich culture, visually inspiring (either natural or great architecture), and it needs to be near or in a city to help grow our business. Where would you say we set up shop and home? What would you look for? Where would you go and why?

Alison Rayner There's nothing that frustrates me more than out of date dress codes. It seems like a feeble attempt to hold on to the past. For example, when I worked in sales at a hotel, peep toe shoes were held in the same regard as showing up in your pjyamas! I believe that if you're working hard & well and are good at your job, why do organizations need archaic dress codes to try to keep their people in line? Especially in a fashion-forward office.

I definitely agreed with dressing to impress for clients. I found that the people in charge of setting the dress code applied their own experiences, beliefs, and prejudices to evaluating what was appropriate & what wasn't. I'm sure that's ok in some situations, but in mine it was a downer.

Fashion is difficult for any one person to police or set up guidelines on because style can be so personal & evoke such strong responses. For example, I wore a pair of black skinny pants with a shimmer, paired with a cute empire waisted jacket & pumps at a gala event full of people from the advertising industry. I received compliments on my outfit that night, but two weeks later I wore the same thing to a gala for the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise and a lady asked if I was pregnant. Two totally different reactions based on the impression my jacket made on two very different groups of people.
