I personally believe that people should take ownership of their content and running their own blog whether that's WordPress, Drupal or whatever. It's just important not to create all your content inside of corporate silos. It's better for someone to publish on a WordPress blog with a plugin that pushes their posts to Tumblr, Facebook and Twitter.

YouTube is a little different because 1) it's hard for average people to encode and publish video on the web without the help of a YouTube, Vimeo, or the like. 2) They aren't creating their content on YouTube, but rather they are just publishing it. In theory they could cross post to Vimeo if YouTube banned them.

I would also highly discourage you from offering your services for free.

Instead, how about a free trial? Sign a contract to work with me for three months, if after the first month you're not the right fit for them, you both can part ways without cost to your client.

Negotiate something else other than monetary compensation, aka, bartering. Maybe you're willing to do a small project for a particular client because they are well connected, for example. Can they get you in front of potential future clients. I wouldn't do it on a hope and a prayer though. Make some at least quasi-concrete arrangement to extract those connections in a meaningful way in exchange for work. There are a host of options here. I've worked with a client who had a beach house and I got that for a week instead of cash.

Finally, why not volunteer your talents? I think there is an important distinction between volunteering and giving away your services to a client. They both build your body of work but the latter comes with all of the problems that Seth noted. I'll add lousy referrals to that list too. You might get referred but more in the sense that you can hire this guy for cheap. Not the best referral!

On the other hand, if you're volunteering for a nonprofit, for example, you might still get a referral but there is an understanding that the reason why you're giving away your services is because of the cause not because you're time is cheap.

Jamie Nacht Farrell I'm always told I should have a "vision" for myself. Yet, I never have and it's led me to success - both professionally and personally. Is it necessary to have a "vision" of what you want in life? If so, does that vision have to include business and personal? And for women, is that "vision" harder to achieve based on the stereotypical 'role' of the mother in a household??? Certainly, be proud of your accomplishments - you have earned it.
Working hard can be a "gift" that you offer to yourself. When viewed in this manner, hard work becomes a more pleasant experience. Think too, of all the people in the world who have never heard a kind word from their parents. It may help you appreciate your mother's pride, even if you are uncomfortable with her words.
And, since you both have made the choice to work hard, celebrate your achievement and be happy about it... and remember it is a gift that you have offered yourselves.

Corbin, thanks! I'm looking forward to starting.

Tatiana, I will agree with you. To be completely honest, I still don't know what I want to do. (I don't think many people can fully answer this question.) I do however know what my interests are. Entrepreneurship, Healthcare, Science and Technology, Sports, Culinary Arts and Video Games. I also know what I don't want. Maybe what you don't like or enjoy is a good starting point for you.

I have always thought asking someone what they want to do is a little rude because it just is. It's like asking someone at a hospital that you don't know why they are there. Why do you feel overwhelmed? Is it fear of rejection? Fear of failure? If so, the worst thing someone can say to you is no. If they tell you no, it doesn't mean that is the end of the road. That person that didn't hire you may have other contacts that may be beneficial to you. You have to make sure you ask first. If fear of failure is the problem, I think it is something that we all do. For all the successes I've had, I'm positive I've failed 5 or 10 times for each success. I was actually pursuing dentistry a year prior to doing what I am doing now. I had to drop the same class three times before I realized it wasn't for me.

I think you have the initiative, I just think you haven't found the thing that makes you want to initiate something yet. What are your interests?

William, I have your information down. I'll be in contact soon.

That is awesome the one that I think you should say to the college is the number one rule to Networking is listening. You got to listen first at a networking event. Find something in common with the other people at the event and it doesn't have to be work related. Just start at their interests or something else and develop the conservation to work. Also, don't worry about meeting everyone at the event. It is not about quantity, it is about quality. And don't worry if you can't find someone you are compatible with sometimes it just doesn't work out. Just say nice to meet ya man move on. The last tip I have is to break out of your shell. You got to get out there and try to network.

Using LinkedIN, or websites such as this one, is networking. You are networking even in social settings. No matter where you are actually doing the physical (or virtual) networking, the fact remains that it's about representing your personal brand, and like some other mentioned, creating reciprocal relationships by listening and taking an active interest in the other person. Start by giving them a venue to talk about themselves, and the will return it back. Makes it much easier to begin that connection if you are coming from a place of wanting to help.

What I do is focus personal branding on 3 aspects in the office. 10% on hardwork, 30% on image, 60% on exposure. Image is what people think of you when they say your name. Do they think of you in a positive light or negative light? Do they think of you as a valuable asset? Exposure is the people you are exposed to everyday. Are you expose to the people that we enhance your personal brand and help you grow in the company? Now hardwork at 10% seems weird, but I believe that you should be doing a good job with work no matter what. That shouldn't be your primary purpose when it comes to enhancing personal brand. That's what I would do to enhance your personal brand in the office.

And when it comes to office gossip I would just stay away from it. It just hurts your reputation and doesn't add value to you.

For example, if you ask a VC investor if they would rather have a "C" product and an "A" team or an "A" product and a "C" team - they would rather have the C product / A team - as they know the A team will execute.

I don't think you need to get an NDA. Put together an executive summary for your product and network around until you find someone whose a "mover and a shaker". This doesn't usually mean someone who can code or who has a "skill set" - you are looking for an "operator" or "general manager" who has taken something from idea to execution and been successful doing so.

I've been where you are - I trusted the right people - and the company is worth millions today. Take a chance, go with your gut.
