Sadya Siddiqui Friends with Money: Two friends decide to start ...well....a start-up. One says I'll put in the money , the other says I'll put in all the daily hours. They both believe this situation will work since both of them are allotting the resources that each of them has - money and time. But will this work? I'm skeptical about this arrangement - i think the friend-with-money will demand results from the other guy & the other guy will always feel shortchanged....

Or the one who is putting in the time and effort but whose efforts may not be as visible? History shows that unless you are directly contributing money you will not have as much say...which will lead inevitably to conflict, power struggles, etc. that can hurt the business. Need more balance here.

Jennifer Koren To anyone that works from home? Are you given guidelines by your employer on what they expect from you when you work from home? For instance, when I moved into my new place, the city decided to start tearing up our road and moving existing lines. I also live in the lightning capital of the world and have frequent visits by hurricanes. Things happen. My thought is supplying a back-up system for hourly distance workers wouldn't be very cost effective. I do think offering a simple incentive to the employees that if they need to be on call if needed, and make sure they know it's not going to be a frequent thing.

Brett Kunsch I was deeply challenged this morning by a post from Leo Baubata of Zen Habits. He proposes that the BEST goal is NO goal. He argues that most of the time you don’t achieve the goals you've defined and you blame it on yourself, but the problem isn’t you, it’s the system! Goals as a system are set up for failure. I am very tempted to follow his logic, but my gut says "No, it's not that black and white." Have a read for yourself, and let's generate a debate Brazen friends! http://bit.ly/geGYpE

I don't have a "goal" of taking a shower in the morning, or a "goal" of going to work, or a "goal" of eating lunch, etc.

I can do these activities with joy, or not, but goals are not required.

Imposing goals on top of these activities can destroy them: if my activities at work have to forward my "goals" for my career, or lunch forward my "goals" for weight loss, then what could have been an enjoyable part of life's journey can be turned into an opportunity for failure.

Jamie Nacht Farrell I just got the offer I've wanted 4ever-2 investors willing to financially back my business model; in location of my choice. Reminds me of this video from Joe McNally. http://www.nikonusa.com/Learn-And-Explore/Photography-Techniques/fy1hs59...
You wouldn't need the 10 strobes obviously, but the same basic effect of how to get from point A to point B. It is the same idea you had in the photo you posted, it's just a lot of precision - speed of the dancer/shutter speed/amount of light/timing the final shot.

Try to replicate the situation you plan on shooting in - lit room, dark room, use your BF as a model for fun, think of color of clothing, what you can use to keep the model lit before your actual strobe goes off, and practice practice practice. Personally, I would keep it as simple as possible. Keep in mind the shot you want, but be flexible with what the situation gives you.

Meg Gallagher I am twenty-five years old and looking to change careers; in undergrad I majored in architecture and have been working at an architecture firm in San Francisco. But now I am hoping to switch into a different creative field, and am strongly considering Illustration. Now I don't know specifically what type of illustration you want to do, there's only two I'm really aware of: technical and editorial and you sound like you want to jump into editorial. Here's the issue, getting frequent paying jobs that will actually support you doing editorial illustration is very difficult with the publishing industry in the condition it's in right now. Most of the artists we use have other careers like architectural illustration, teaching, graphic designers, etc. This isn't meant to thwart your intentions, but my suggestion is to keep this on the side until you show yourself you can support yourself doing it as your main job. A degree won't help you in illustration - it's all about your portfolio. Talk to other people in the industry, SF should have plenty of associations and organizations for this kind of work.

One of the services they offer is hiring the right person. They provide a number of facilitation's that help you choose the right person for the job. (link below). If the company can afford it they might want to invest in this type of hiring training and screening. People usually have two sides one that they show to the world and the one who they really are. People may be capable of doing a specific job, but it may not be the job that they are best suited for. The people you have may be the right people in the wrong positions. http://www.vision-alignment.com

@Smith+Frizzy - You are completely correct. It's up to managers to set the processes by which a team member can follow that is why they are the leaders. People cannot be creative if they are constantly trying to figure out A) What they are supposed to be doing B) What expectations are and C) Where they are trying to go without the right guidance. Too many times managers and people in forms of leadership rely upon assumptions that because someone has a certain job or experience that they are going to know exactly what is expected of them. Good leaders set the expectations and the course for the employees to follow. Usually people who have a good structure and foundation are more productive. If they are not then they may not be in the right position or a good fit.

What about combating piracy by being personal? In general, I think if people feel like they are interacting with a person they are less likely to pirate something because it feels like "the author needs this to live on". If they feel like they are interacting with a company then they don't feel so bad. Some things are just part of the publishing world and the capabilities of our companies. I used to work way more than this when I was younger - we used to push out 2-4 magazines a month between two of us, and worked 70-80 hours a week. So comparatively, it's not as bad because it's only one month a year, but this year it's just taken a real toll on me.
