10 weeks ago from Gen-Y Journey: Tips, Insights, Experiences For Young Professionals
I’m Tyler Durbin and I’m on quite a journey. A product of Smalltown, USA, my journey has taken me from the farms of Central Ohio to Hong Kong and a stint in Central America along the way.
I come from a town where everyone does know your name. A small, catholic farming community, I grew up playing sports, hunting, working on cars and doing anything and everything outside. This is a place where my friends have become my family.
My journey led me to Miami University where waiting for me was an enormous culture shock. I was all of a sudden among 18 year olds with trust funds, pastel colored polos, and high school educations I couldn’t even comprehend.
It’s those two worlds that have shaped who I am today. I’ve seen rich and poor, western and eastern, victories and defeats. This has created a passion in me to be open to different perspectives and seek out new ways to learn and think.
What is GenYJourney.com?
Being a young person in such a dynamic world is difficult. The 10 years of your life that include high school, college and the start of your grown-up life are so important. Each year, each experience sets a foundation for the rest of your life. People are extremely vulnerable at this time in their life because they are gaining new responsibilities and independence yet can still be easily influenced. My goal is to develop a model for young people to use for guidance when they are making decisions in their high school and college careers as they embark on their professional career.
During my time at Miami, I was able to study abroad in Central America and Southeast Asia and meet some of the most interesting, intelligent and hardworking students in the world.
