3To varying degrees in society we tend to make accommodations, both in our minds and in our expectations, for those who suffer from certain conditions or disorders. This is only fair and right of us. But just because somebody's obstacle has no name doesn't mean that their struggle is not just as serious, and just as deserving of consideration and accommodation. 5Today I am beginning the process of unfollowing, and unsubscribing, and just plain giving up on some of the "must follow!" gurus, blogs, Twitter feeds and websites I sort of fell for in 2010. Actually I didn't totally fall for all of them, but I was acting on the water cooler premise that if I read what everyone else read, I'd have more to talk about and hence more to network about. But it was inauthentic. I'm tired. No more "Godin-like" sites for me without some unique appeal.

6I have a (Non) Plan for 2011. Which of course technically means I have a plan, and I just being cute about it. But there is a reason I call it a non-plan. It's because I am going to concentrate on things about me that won't move me forward in the traditional, career oriented sense, but which are prudent at this point I feel. 16In the last few days, I have heard more than one person use "Life's not fair," as an argument. as in, the total presentation they made in defense of their opinion on something consisted of those three words. And you know what? I'm sick of it. It's not enough. A lot of crap out there needs to be fixed, and it is time to put up or shut up. And saying that "life's not fair" does neither. 17Poor. It isn't what or who you think it is. Oh sure, it CAN be those things and those people. But the general advise, the conventional wisdom that is shared with people who are struggling but not panhandling is skewed by assumptions about who is poor and who is not, nay CANNOT be poor. The things we must have or do, the places we must go, the people we must hire in order to be taken seriously. Poor people can't do it. I can't do it either. Did you know that? http://bit.ly/9glOKx

22I haven't really been able to feel close to my my local group of "friends". Nor do they make much of an effort to get closer to me. To know me better. I used to think we were all close, but now it's clear we are not. Could it be because I am too ambiguous about what i stand for? Might there not be some advantage in allowing those who want to help you with something the chance to do so, even though you could, in the end, make it on your own? 25The Star Wars community makes for an apt metaphor and perfect example of the dangers of becoming obsessed with anything. Obsessed being something different from enjoying. Obsessed being something different from even love. We tend to use the words interchangeably, but some of the thing Star Wars fans do go far beyond simple fandom. 27It is a curious thing to me that as individuals we are often expected to take the "how can I help you?" instead of the, "What can you do for me?" approach to networking and branding. Yet some of the same people who chastise you for saying "what's in it for me?" as a person also say, of companies..."They're a business. You can't expect them to be worried YOU. They exist for the bottom line." Why shouldn't businesses also be expected to revolve around, "How can we help you?"

30I think it is not only unfair, but very impractical, for job seekers to be held to different, and exceedingly higher standards of behavior, effort, and professionalism than companies and hiring managers are held to. Yes, we can declare, "those are just the rules,", but until somebody insists on boycotting the game somehow, nothing will change. The bloated, antiquated, unfair, (and many times illegal) processes that are put to use to employ people will (has??) run the economy into the ground.

31I too often run into people who volunteer to do something, and then half-ass their way through it. Nobody is making you do this thing. You asked for the chance to do so. A paycheck, or lack thereof should not determine the quality of your work. Once you volunteer, you've put your name onto something, and if you give a damn about my assessment of you as a person, you'll work hard to get it right.

33The assumption that anyone that is intelligent andwilling to work hard can ALWAYS get a job is one that is by and large held only by people who have been steadily employed their whole lives. Not many struggling unemployed graduates and/or professionals subscribe to this nonsense.

35Get a system. But not mine. YOURS. You don't need to organize your thoughts and plans according to any methodology except that which works perfectly for you. If that means a Blackberry, fine. If it means 3 foot high stacks of paper all around your living room, fine. If you use an abacus, fine. The key is to put your life in YOUR order, not in some objective type of universal order as defined by some nameless ergonomics specialist that knows nothing about your personal tastes.

38After college, it's time to start ignoring age. In matters of career, dreams, friendships, and yes even love and sex. Holding on to outdated perceptions about age, and which ages should or should not be mingling only limits your human exposure. If you don't have something in common with a potential lover or business partner, than of course go no further, but it's time to stop assuming you could not or should not have anything in common with people just because of an arbitrary age difference.

39It's too bad that companies don't have artists on staff, specifically for the purpose of creating art. Or music. People whose job it is to spruce up the building, provide stressed employees with entertainment throughout the day. Lightening the mood. Sort of like the Jesters of old. Or the Court artisans and wandering minstrel types. I wander if there is room for such an idea in America. I wonder how having such a cultured workplace would effect productivity.

44I wish you could have "mini-careers". You'd would work someplace for 6 months, or a year, without the need to commit your entire career. People would know going in it would be temporary. This would allow many people for a time to make productive use of their passion for a specific cause or entity, and cut back on the "what ifs". Plus, people could feed themselves while they did so, unlike an internship. At the end of the term, they are not stigmatized as "job-hoppers", but are seen as explorers.

But few threads have ever so directly struck on how it feels to find the 9-5 job hunt to be so pointless. A wake up call to those who think a quick smile, a snappy blog, and an extroverted personality for networking are all one needs to get a job.

Despite the fact that this is only the first stage of the study, as an introvert I really like where the data is headed. http://nyti.ms/8YKjoh I can't stand small talk, and as an introvert grow weary of being told that my success depends on loving it. And though I never thought of it this way, I think I would be more comfortable engaging a stranger in substantive conversation than I would in small talk. Now THAT'S networking.
