I didn't know I wanted to work for a start-up until I started working for one. I had never given it any thought.

I suppose some people would see some of the things I experienced as negative, but I loved it.

During my first summer as an intern (two years ago now!!), three of us sat in one cubicle, back-to-back. We rented space from an accounting firm for the longest time and felt kind of uncomfortable because we were very start-up-y and Gen Y and they were...well...accountants.

When I came on as a full-time employee after graduating, my salary was small and we didn't have health benefits, but with a little bit of patience, that has changed significantly. As the company grows, so does my own career.

And I'm not a founder, so perhaps I don't have any of the fame or glory, but I know in my heart that I have helped build something amazing and successful and sustainable. And the founder of the company knows it too!

paulmacp: Google page rank on my own personal name, is why I changed my personal domain from MoreGoogle page rank on my own personal name, is why I changed my personal domain from http://paulmacpherson.net to http://paulmacp.com. I have done this as part of my re-branding exercise (I call it Paul MacPherson 3.0). I am a few months in to this personal project. There was just too many "Paul MacPherson" out there, and some of them are really smart and have impressive web presences. So instead of competing Paul against Paul… I have evolved me (V3.0) into paulmacp. Where I have been able to secure paulmacp.com and paulmacp on twitter, facebook, linkedin, youtube... you get the idea.

Now I intend to build my brand around http://paulmacp.com as my central information hub and each of the social networks acting as a spoke coming out of my central brand, directing my reach, my message in to each of those clouds.

I am an aspiring author with a book due out in June and look at this as marketing infrastructure for the launch of the formal campaign once the book is available.

By "Hub" I mean a central site that allows people to not only find you, but find out what you are doing. It's not really a resume in the traditional sense, but it crosses over into that. Some great examples are: www.dannychoo.com and www.paulstamatiou.com - both of these websites, while focusing on various topics give a reader an immediate sense of who they are and what they are experts at/passionate about. www.alexking.org is another, albeit different, example. Hope that helps!

Zack Zaban Quick question to all you Brazen folks regarding Personal Branding. The other day, I was speaking with a friend during a class and we discussed transparency in social media. He said that you should have your Facebook/Twitter accounts open for everyone to see. I, however, said that users have the right to choose what content they put up on social media sites. So, my question: to have a successful personal brand, do you need to have complete transparency across different social media platforms?

Your brand does not depend on whether or not you protect your tweets or make your Facebook private, it revolves around the fact that you deliver value to your readers/viewers in a consistent manner. That could mean 1 or 1,000,000 people depending on your goals and milestones.

I blog because it helps me refine my views in a way that thinking or talking about them more amorphously doesn't; because it pushes me to improve the style and concision of my writing; and because it forces me to really examine my beliefs, articulate them, and then to stand behind them. It's definitely made me more assertive and unafraid to state opinions.

Patrick Ambron @christina That's the same problem many younger professionals face. Your best bet is to position all your experience so it is relevant for the job at hand. We often tell recent grads that they should describe their roles and responsibilities for specific projects they completed. Another great way to combat inexperience is to have a supplemental blog/website. You may not have been working in the industry for years, but at least you are a continual learner with thoughts about the field.

Chris(tina) Brady Can perceived age ruin your personal brand? I've been trying to find a job since August, and despite doing more-or-less everything correctly, I cannot even secure an interview. I'm not as young as I look, but people tend to want to peg me as under 21. In fact, at the place I'm temping, the job I'm doing was recently filled by someone younger than me who has less experience, but looks older. (And I was not ever given the opportunity to interview due to a lack of experience.)

You're most likely be able to fall into just by following your passion. The other thing that I think us young folks don't do well is to "stick". We are tempted by new opportunities or wonder if the grass is greener on the other side. "I like this, but maybe I should try that." Stop thinking about the try that is hard for the young & eager, but that's focus.

It is hard to define yourself in a few words when you're a jack-of-all-trades and can do more than what you can brand yourself for. The problem is that no one wants to limit themselves to just a few things, which is a problem I have been faced with as well. Kind of the all or nothing, go big or go home approach.
