Timothy Johnson III I'm considering signing up for the Brazen U Social Media Boot Camp course and I wanted to know which fellow Brazens took the course. What was the real-world impact for you, post-Bootcamp? How did it the course improve your social media efforts and know-how for your current job or side-gig? I'd love to get some feedback from Brazen community and I'm looking forward to hearing about your experiences. Thanks a lot!

Vickie Elmer How does Facebook figure into your career, job search approach? I just wrote a piece for Fortune.com about how and why Gen Y doesn't share its job or employment info on Facebook as much as Gen X and Boomers do - it's at http://bit.ly/wTtt1g . (Research by Dan Schawbel's Millennial Branding.) It made me wonder how much of our career information does show up on Facebook, and how that's changing. So how do you use Facebook professionally? And any advice for others who are just starting on this?

I risked all my credit cards to start up a training software company making conversation rehearsal courses (www.talksmith.net). We sold Asperger's Syndrome courses to school districts in North Dakota and Minnesota, and while we are not wealthy, I did get a patent out of it. By the way, I grew up in Silver Spring and was a TV news cameraman on Capitol Hill in the 70's. Innovation means taking risks and going down a path whose end may not be visible. Reminds me of what I was told by an Alzheimer's caregiver:

"Have Alzheimer's? Meet new people every day! Do new things every day! Experience new things every day! Go new places every day! Have new adventures every day!"

Not politically correct, but given the grim daily life of a caregiver, a little humor is needed.

I am using XAMPP as well, but only because the group recommended it and it ended up being easier than what the book suggested. Rebecca,

I know I'm digging up an old thread here, but how has the experience of learning PHP & MySQL been treating you?

Once you've gotten some experience with the basics, I'd recommend using that experience in a true LAMP stack.

There are 2 easy (easier...) ways to move in that direction:
- virtualize a LAMP server locally (using VirtualBox, Parallels, etc.), or
- set up a virtualized server through RackSpace, AWS, or similar.

If you're planning to stick with it, it is important to break away from the Windows-based stack. Linux-based stacks tend to be more performant and robust, and don't suffer with the issues inherent in the Windows-targeted implementation of PHP. It is very likely that any professional opportunities that you'll encounter will require LAMP experience over X/WAMP experience.

I personally believe that people should take ownership of their content and running their own blog whether that's WordPress, Drupal or whatever. It's just important not to create all your content inside of corporate silos. It's better for someone to publish on a WordPress blog with a plugin that pushes their posts to Tumblr, Facebook and Twitter.

YouTube is a little different because 1) it's hard for average people to encode and publish video on the web without the help of a YouTube, Vimeo, or the like. 2) They aren't creating their content on YouTube, but rather they are just publishing it. In theory they could cross post to Vimeo if YouTube banned them.

Depending on where you are in your career, even free help can seem like a drag on your time, though I also think it depends on what the help is. Negotiating tips, for example, can come in very handy for someone who hasn't done it in a while (or ever). Having someone to bounce strategies off of could also help a lot, based on their expertise. It's up to us to sift through the information we get, and no one source is the be-all and end-all. Is it?

It's my old news background... hook you in with a headline. In a good way of course! :)
Great point on the celebs and sports writers. I follow Adam Schefter and I love when he says "Filed to ESPN:" He is giving us information that we normally would have had to wait until SportsCenter came on. We all have people we follow as a guilty pleasure, I think. Rainn Wilson is hilarious. I know I'm not going to get something to add to a proposal, but it may be GREAT around the water cooler.

Thanks for adding your perspective, Patrick. Be well.

Thanks, Brianne, Mark, Demetra, and Kayla!

Brianne, I agree that the formal education only goes so far. Not that I would ever knock it; I loved being in academia. In one way or another I'm a permanent college student.

However, there's nothing like "making it happen," as Mark put it. It involves every critical thinking skill we have, plus execution, which is harder to master - except by trial and error.

And amen, Kayla - that's the right attitude. I try to cultivate that. Not to say I never complain, but to say that I really love my job/s. Something about hard work is satisfying unto itself!

If it were yes/no, then letting out a name and a face would include letting out SSNs, but one does not necessarily lead to another. I think that older generations, as well as some Gen Ys to be fair, have a lower threshold on the privacy continuum, while others, like myself, share a lot but stop before giving away location data. Finally, there are people who just give away everything (we can debate whether or not they realize the ramifications of their actions or exactly how public their postings are another day). No one is wrong, but no one is right either because it's not a yes/no. It's a "how much."
