Janet Brent I am a new start-up trying to freelance graphic/web design services. My site is www.byjanet.net Since I am starting out, and based in Asia, I am outsourcing myself for cheap until May. I am finding that there is a 'planting seeds' period of freelance in which you have to be patient and trust the process. I'm still trying to get the hang of it (particularly networking 'planting seeds'). Have had a handful of client leads but nothing that has solidified. Do you have similar experiences or advice?

A great rule a thumb is to never discount what you would consider your unique selling proposition. So setting a penetration price across the broad might be a big much. You'll have to let us know how it works out for you.

Write down your value proposition and price justification, and stick to it.

Thomas Ransom Based on the "Blue Ocean Strategy," which factors and value do you consider the most important to your PR/Marketing company’s current and future success? #Marketing

Making my customer feel important and emotionally connecting to fulfill customer needs is critical to gaining their attention. Once attention is gained, Differentiation generating Recognition. How can I be incremental by being different enough that it peaks customer interest?
Identifying my audience to know who are the Creators, Refiners, Advancers, and Executors and which will be the most likely to buy from me. Then drive my services to connect with them and go with it. See what's important and not important to my offers and focus on only what's important. That will generate interest, build my customer community and when each customer buys and is satisfied it will generate word of mouth advertising that increases interest and drives more people to my company building succsss.

Blue Ocean Strategy is a great marketing tool to consider for any product or service. It holds all the key elements that push marketing and hits on those within the buying community that actually do the buying. Great tool when used with thought!

Thanks Linda for the well thought out explanation.

Thomas Ransom Best Advice I've Gotten on Personal Branding- Get a firm grasp on how you come off during a first impression. How are people likely to stereotype you? Then behave contrary to it. It takes a certain level of self-efficacy, but really goes a long way.

I really like that. I can see how that would benefit you. The challenge is getting that firm grasp of how you come off during a first impression. I imagine mentors, colleagues, friends, former bosses, etc. could really help give you that insight.

Thomas Ransom: Big fan of the Pecha Kucha format. Would be interested is hearing your take on what makes it marketably-different from TED.

Actually a few months ago I drew a venn diagram of the three major idea-sharing events (PechaKucha, TEDx, & Ignite) comparing/contrasting them and everyone seemed to get a kick out of it (http://www.carleemallard.com/2010/02/its-a-free-market-for-spreading-ideas/). The venn diagram could definitely use an update though after actually ATTENDING all 3 of those events. TEDxTriangleNC was vastly different from the PechaKucha events that I organize. TEDx was a much more highly organized event (more like a conference) lasting all day from 10am-6pm. There was a schedule of speakers with their bios printed out, T-shirts for sale, high-end sponsors like Whole Foods to cater a free lunch, professional photography and video, etc. TEDx also requires organizers to show a certain number of TED videos during the event to break up the local speakers. The speakers at TEDx in general are also much more intellectual and sometimes slightly more high-profile (the TEDx organizers cold-call people to get them to speak at the event).

PechaKucha on the other hand is almost nothing like TEDx in those ways. It's incredibly laid-back, low-cost, usually taking place at a local bar/restaurant/office and has a strict format (20x20 slides, 10-12 speakers) keeping it at a max of 2 hours.

Anyways, if you want to know more, get in touch!

Thomas Ransom WHAT MAKES PEOPLE WILLING TO CHANGE? I just finished reading about how people motivated to change have to address three things: their rider, their elephant and their path. Interesting for anyone looking to make a career out of marketing or storytelling. Give me a holler if you know what I'm talking about.
