I don't use names, I discuss incidents or operations which I don't necessarily agree with. Mostly, because I'm curious about others perceptions, and their advice for dealing with similar situations. I don't think it's wrong, I think it's ok to ask advice and to give examples of what you might be dealing with.

Melissa Breau So I've always been one of those people who attends networking events and then spends the evening holding up the wall–until last night. I finally managed to overcome my fears and introduce myself to people, with great results. But I find this is an issue a lot of people have. Has anyone else had to overcome a similar problem? Sabera (Kapasi) Photographer I am currently working on 2 career paths - Marketing / Cooking education. While I have an MBA in Marketing, I also have a passion for Indian food and cooking. I do a lot of consulting and volunteer work in Marketing, and recently began Indian food cooking classes. What surprises me is that I'm equally passionate about nurturing both career paths. How do you feel about working 2 jobs? How would you prioritize your time and resources between them?

If all of those could be placed in one job, it would scare me!! I would say that if it wasn't for the volunteer roles that I have taken on to help hone my leadership skills, I probably would not be at the place where I am career wise. Early in my career, I wasn't given much leadership roles (although I had many many roles while in college). It's been an unique challenge to get the corporate environment to see the skill set that I have (so until then, I have continued to lead outside of work). Now they are beginning to recognize this (but may be too late).

@Carlee - Thanks for the link! I've put the book on my reading list! Hopefully we can share notes on the book once I'm done reading it.

@Rebecca - I know precisely what you mean. I took up french classes when I worked in advertising fulltime back in India and found that it took so much effort to be equally dedicated to both! I loved learning the language, but work drained me over the week.

I'm posting an update here on a separate discussion topic I just thought of!

@Bryon - Isn't volunteering THE BEST? I never realized how fulfilling it was till I started doing it. And with you on pursuing other interests while volunteering.

I know what you mean about developing skills outside work. I keep drawing comparisons to India because I feel like so much is different here. But back there, a manager didn't really evaluate your achievements outside work to give you better projects at the workplace. Here, at least you get a chance.

I had a really bad room-mate experience in college and I was told by my cousin to document every incident between my room-mate and me in detail. Those notes came in handy later when I filed complaints against her with the dorm authorities. For an apartment lease why don't you try to discuss breaking out of the lease with the apartment owners? You might have to pay some penalty, but your safety and reputation is really worth a lot more than the penalty to break a lease. If you can talk to a lawyer, do so and let your room-mates know that you are consulting with them. Intimidating using legal channels really works in many cases. Good luck!

I mean, there was an "ah-ha" moment when you figured it out, but it doesn't explain why the rest of the season has been soooo lame. With that said, so if MiB doesn't want off the island, does that negate the rest of the season about if he DOES get off? Or is there another way that we just don't know about?

Penelope Trunk I wonder about this power couple topic: here's something to think about: What couple is not aiming to help each other get what each person wants? What couple is not made of two people who are ambitious about meeting their goals, whatever they are? And when, in the history of business, has there ever been a marriage with kids that survived two extremely successful careers? I think never. I think someone always steps aside to take care of family. Or there's a divorce.

There are times one of gets frustrated by the dedication of the other to their goals, but we are great about "checking" each other and keeping it from being a brewing problem.

Part of the way we have been able to do that is by me putting our kids first, him focusing on his career as necessary, but also at many times putting our kids first. When I started to want to do more work, he has been supportive. We're still finding a balance, and frankly I'm hoping to earn more so I can pay to outsource more of my household duties, but it works for us.

I think we learned very early in our relationship through trial by fire. I have no doubt that no matter what we do career-wise, our relationship and family are always first. This actually makes us more successful since we have good boundaries and only invest time and effort when and where it will help us reach our goals.

Tania Deb Brief summary of Trunk's Resume boot camp: Don't put every job on resume, tell a story. Be creative, don't lie. Add achievements, not job descriptions. Bullet points, not short descriptions. Gaps in resume good (shows time for self learning & breaks). Always add a short, basic cover letter that lists 3 recent accomplishments. Use "increase"/"decrease" to refer to accomplishments at a job. 15% is a good estimate for percent improvement, but don't overuse the number. Hire career coach for an hr.

Paula Patinella I prefer to have people listening to what I am saying rather than looking at what I'm wearing. I keep things simple, choosing solids over prints & being bold with rich colors.
