A self-proclaimed life long learner, I have focused on education/teaching centered on Gerontology, Gerontological Nursing practice and all aspects of elder care which includes, but is not limited to, ethics in long term care, palliative care, dementia care, managing excessive and agitated/responsive behaviors. As an enterostomal therapist, I bring a significant level of expertise to a population at significant risk for skin breakdown, skin tears and the development of pressure ulcers by utilizing and implementing preventive processes. My personal philosophy for gerontology is to facilitate and ensure a holistic approach to all elder care, to support all care team members in the provision of care based on best practices & evidence based practice. In my current position, I focus strongly on effective ethical & respectful approaches toward elders with dementia and ensuring this group of elders in our care continue to be upheld as individuals with worth and value in our communities. I also hold an interest in wound, ostomy and continence care and resolving the complex care issues related to these situations; I feel my wide range of knowledge and experiences allows me to assess and provide effective holistic care for elders. I believe that our professionals, as care team members, must involve themselves in life long learning to ensure best practice and enhanced quality of care for the elders and clients we serve.
