Sue Miley MBA, MA, LPC, Business and Career Coach I work with small businesses and continue to be amazed at the lack of foundational business building blocks that are missing. Here is a post that will begin a new series A Small Business Trend that Needs to Stop http://wp.me/pGXEu-LT. What are your thoughts? Am I missing any?

Sue Miley MBA, MA, LPC, Business and Career Coach I think we all have a tendency to want to change the things we don't like in others. After all it's for their own good. Unfortunately, it doesn't work. We really can't change someone else; they have to want to change. So what do we do? Here are my thoughts: http://tinyurl.com/3s95o9s What are yours?

Sue Miley MBA, MA, LPC, Business and Career Coach Last night I was on a panel at LSU answering questions for job seekers. I could hear in their voices and see it in their eyes; they were considering giving up on finding a job in their field. Here is a post I wrote on this called Graduates If You Give Up On Your Career Now You Will Hate Yourself Later http://tinyurl.com/38w4bry. I would love your thoughts and hope you will pass it on to any young people who may be wavering!

Elisabeth Ericson How do you begin a cover letter? You need a compelling introduction to create a memorable first impression, but it's hard to write one that's professional but not stiff, sincere but not self-indulgent, interested but not sycophantic. Any tips for those of us just starting out?

The first one should address, "Your first experience with X Company/Product", the second should address "Why You're Impressed with X Company for X Reasons" and the last paragraph shoul explain "Why You're A Good Fit/Problems You'd Love to Solve". It works pretty nicely.

It also gives me a bit more credibility when speaking to other professionals and going for jobs etc when they can quickly and easily not only see my writing but things that interest me too. If you can show you have written about something very closely related to the job you are looking to do then it helps convince the company you want to work for them not just find any job.

Cameron Plommer I want get feedback on an idea I have I think a lot of high school and college grads are at a real disadvantage when they enter the real world. School ignores so many practical skills and doesn't push students to be remarkable. I'd like to set up some kind of school, workshop or program that gives students the information, resources and motivation to be remarkable people. Which in turn will hopefully lead to better people and employees. Thoughts. Criticism. Business partners???

There's been a lot of hub-bub going around in the start-up/entrepreneurial blogosphere about how job-hopping is bad. Always interesting to see how the conversation ebbs and flows... many who say it's bad are older now and just want their employees to stay. But I imagine they job-hopped to start their company in the first place.

Big companies stopped providing retirement and other incentives to keep people in jobs for a long time. They want loyalty without having to provide the incentive. Opportunities are different for each individual and each person needs to look at the entire landscape of their career and opportunities to make a decision to take new opportunities. Regardless of their time in a job. However, I think we should be cautious when we are promoting the reasons and acceptability for job hopping. People shouldn't job hop as a strategy in itself. There is not intrinsic worth in this and in many ways can cause problems for the individual, not just employers. As someone older and someone who has hired thousands of people, I would simply advise that you need to consider your situation, your reasons, your observations and your temperament. Stay if you have abundant opportunity where you are or if you need the security of time to build confidence and creativity. If you are stuck where you are and find opportunities abounding, then consider them. It isn't a one size fits all world out there!

Andrea V. Lewis After taking some time off to re-evaluate my career path, I'm FINALLY getting job bites. The catch, a long awaited position just opened up for my husband in Denver. The COO has recommended him & he's scheduled to fly out for an interview at the EOM. My question is, do you think I should continue w/ my job search out here (Los Angeles) or put it on hold? Plus, how long should I wait to tell potential employers, where I've interviewed multiple times that I MAY be moving? What's your advice?

However, that interview has yet to happen, nor do I have a job offer on the table. Therefore, it just doesn't make sense for me to stop looking for other opportunities, especially if the current offer doesn't pan out. I'd say keeping looking and contacting people.

Rebecca Thorman Check this out, "There's No Room for the Idea Guy" - It's so true, and something I had to come to terms with at my start-up too. I'm always great at execution, but I badly wanted to be the idea person. But that's not what start-ups need the most. - http://bit.ly/9thAI8

I came to this network and read your post and the 37 signals post. They walk in and say what's next!

That describes the failure and success of many "Idea Guys" who I've known. Those who continued holding pointless meetings where they held forth about Their Next Big Idea before the existing one (i.e., the COMPANY ITSELF!) were disastrous and unsuccessful. Those who knew when to hunker down and hire good people to execute were successful and will be successful with many more than just one idea.

Thanks for sharing, Rebecca!
