Ryan Paugh Even though I'm currently living in Madison, WI I'd really love to move back to the East Coast soon to be near more friends and family. I've sold my girlfriend on the idea of coming with me. Her first pick is somewhere in North Carolina. My first pick is somewhere in/around Boston, MA. She thinks Boston is too cold + doesn't have enough of an artsy scene. I guess I'm not really sure. I figured I'd leave it up to the experts. Any thoughts guys?

Bob Larson Because the legal job market sucks, I've been looking at non-law jobs to pay the bills in the meantime. Non-law employers see that I'm a recent law school grad and licensed attorney, and assume (correctly) that I'll leave as soon as I find a lawyer job. Does anyone have any advice on how to handle this? I've started leaving law school off of my resume, but then that makes it look I worked full-time for the past three years, instead of part-time. I'd rather not lie, but that's a 3-year hole.

We're living in grim times for many of us that tried to do "all the right things" and pursued higher education, grew our skills, etc., only to find that at the end of the day, many businesses will source labor as cheaply as possible (even if the results are inferior) in exchange for short-term gain.

For all the talk of a "knowledge economy" and the value of education, the ROI for those that have to incur substantial educational debt is starting to be called into question. Entry level positions that now require a Masters degree only speak to how "devalued" such credentials are becoming in some circles.

As I understand it, even the Census Bureau reports that slightly over half of all Americans age 25 years or more have a 4-year Bachelors degree, and only about 10% have post-graduate education. And increasingly large numbers of people in these categories face "under-employment" even when possession of such degrees is little more than a check box on some HR form for certain jobs.

Hence my belief that being able to constantly adapt and adopt new skills is paramount in this "new normal" and whether a W-2 employee or self-employed, you need to consider yourself for all intents and purposes "freelance" and act accordingly.

I can honestly state that in my years in the working world, I have never burned a client or employer due to "lack of loyalty" but the same cannot be said the other way around. I think that many companies are in for a rude awakening having adopted an attitude that, "The beatings will continue until morale improves" in their interaction with employees...

Stephanie Springer I'm about to make a big career change, and I'm very excited. However, I'm looking at my bookshelves filled with materials related to my previous life as a bench chemist. My new job is not lab related at all, so I have things that I most likely will not need in my new job. Part of me wants to donate my books, but part of me is afraid to do so - what if the new job doesn't work out, and I'm back in the lab? How do you decide what books and resources you need to keep?

While I'm sure you have the best of intentions, I have a hard time seeing this work out well for people. If a company begins to have a visible interest in a certain school's students, that school's admissions start to become skewed, eventually changing that university into a training institution for a handful of businesses, instead of preparing people for greater careers beyond their first jobs.

I work with people who were laid off from the big 4 accounting firms. They do great work and know what they're doing. They were laid off, because the big 4 accounting firms promote to fill openings, then hire a whole new batch of students. When they hire too many students (and they usually do), they lay off the 1- and 2-year staff until they are back to the number of entry-level positions they want.

I'm just afraid that this kind of partnership will create a sort of catch-and-release program for employers.

@Rebecca, Ouch! But if you are a university and you stop educating people, can you still call yourself a university? It is and always will be the primary function of colleges and universities to educate their students. Most have a career services office, host career events, write letters of recommendation, review resumes, etc., but at the end of the day, no one is promising you a job. You still have to do the work to get the job. But that's part of the education too; learning how to look for jobs, so that you can stand on your own two feet.

I live in an apt. building in Rosslyn where I would say a solid 10 to 15% of people have a dog. Rosslyn would also be somewhat in the middle between Bethesda and Alexandria (at least in terms of the metro). You can start by stop saying "out of the box". For one, it's a cliché; the opposite of creative.

Secondly, it's wrong. Real creativity comes from having to think INSIDE boxes, that is, with constraints.

Haikus come from a strict structure of three lines of five, seven and five syllables. A great chef can create a delicious meal with limited ingredients like leftovers and those strange, little-used condiments in back of the fridge. MacGyver escapes from a prison cell with makeshift tools.

If you have everything to work with, where do you start?
