About Me

I've worked as a wildland firefighter, a sailing instructor, and a tax preparer. I've sold everything from books to sleigh rides to wedding gowns. I'm tenacious and flexible. I solve problems and I've been told I'm an unbelievable "task master."

Work History

  • Outward Bound Inc
  • Assistant Instructor and Head Logistics Coordinator, Maine Sea Program
  • May 2008 to August 2009
  • I spent two summers working and sailing with Outward Bound in Rockland, Maine. As a logistics coordinator, I was responsible for making sure students got where they needed to be when they needed to be there and that the instructors had all the necessary resources to execute a successful course.

As an assistant instructor, I was responsible for facilitating a safe, open environment for learning and pushing a student's comfort zone. Adults are not so comfortable with stepping outside their comfort zone.

  • AmeriCorps*National Civilian Community Corps
  • Team Leader and Corps Member
  • January 2006 to November 2007
  • NCCC is a team-based, residential program for 18 to 24 year olds. As a Corps Member, I worked in Chicago doing taxes for low-income families and individuals then spent the fire season of 2006 as a Type II Wildland Firefighter. In 2007 I stayed on with NCCC as a Team Leader. My team worked in Baton Rouge, LA with Habitat for Humanity Greater Baton Rouge affiliate and then back to Colorado for another fire season. I was the Team Leader of the Year for my unit at NCCC and was voted AmeriCorps Firefighter of the Year by my team members.

Education

  • Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs
  • Master of Public Affairs, Nonprofit Management, Policy Analysis, Certificate in Social Entrepreneurship
  • 2009 - 2011
  • IUPUI Herron School of Art & Design
  • Bachelors of Fine Art, Visual Communication, Photography
  • 2000 - 2005
Interests
Social entrepreneurship, non-profits and how to make them sustainable. Reading, talking and thinking about re-designing our food system. I have diagrams. Beer, running, running races that have beer, climbing whenever possible, learning, reading about how people think and why they do the (crazy) things they do.
Goals
  1. To save the world, of course.
  2. To create something.
  3. To not make things worse.
Favorite Quote
"Social entrepreneurs are not content just to give a fish or teach how to fish. They will not rest until they have revolutionized the fishing industry." -- Bill Drayton
Specialties
I'm good at naming things. I like brainstorming how to save the world while drinking wine with smart people. I do leap before I look - jumping into projects, moving across the country, before I know what I'm getting myself into. Some call it brave, some call it stupid, I call it interesting. Why do something if you already know what the outcome will be?
