Sharalyn Hartwell It partially comes down to industry, grad school is almost necessity in some. For instance, if you're a teacher, having your masters is about the only way to advance your pay scale. But, in most industries, real world experience is just as valuable (and arguably more so) than grad school. So, for people in those careers, it comes down to personal preference. Davis says he'd feel more comfortable facing "walls" w/grad school under his belt. I'm not that way. I'd rather confront IRL.

It makes me feel like I can go back if things go completely off into left field and see what I had intended. As long as you have that, just follow it as long as you can. You can always go back and edit on paper, but when you edit yourself in your own head sometimes ideas get lost. I say this as the biggest offender--I'm trying to work on the self-censoring thing.

Is there stigma surrounding the well-wishing in the writing community as in the theatre community? I'm always loathe wish writers the 'l-word' (not lesbian) because I am superstitious about creative work.

Jessica Greekwood Interview today and I'm, of course, not sure what to wear. I know I need to wear a suit but I only have one suit. If I wear that on the first interview, what will I wear if asked back for a second interview? Perhaps I should invest in another suit, but the whole idea of wearing one color from head to toe freeks me out. Not to mention, you can't possibly stand out to your potential employer. Can I mix and match as long as I wear a suit jacket and look great? What are the rules here?

Becky Benishek Does anyone have trouble with too-short sleeves? I almost always have to go up a size just to ensure the sleeves are long enough, and then of course the entire fit of the blouse is compromised. Otherwise I get salespeople assuring me I can "just roll the sleeves up." I don't want to HAVE to roll the sleeves up. Sure, I can take the too-large blouse to a tailor, but that's an added expense & trip. Arrgh!

I find some brands just tend to cut sleeve and pant lengths longer. Victoria's Secret is a good place for structured work blouses, they tend to have longer sleeves. You only need to order a few things to get an idea of how their sizing typically works.

Also, because clothing is cut many layers at once, there can be a big discrepancy between blouses of the same size. I've found as much as a 1/2" difference in sleeve or pant length. Once you find something you like, measure out to find the blouse with the longest sleeve in your size. Match up the seams under the arms and follow out to the cuff. You'll be amazed at the difference you'll find. Same works for pants and measuring out the inseam. :) (Handy trick I use all the time! Sometimes that extra 1/4 to 1/2" makes all the difference in the world.)

@Sharalyn, OMG, Go-Go-Gadget! That cracked me up. I don't think I've ever gotten a long-sleeved blouse from Vic's Secret, that's a great idea! Express has been almost-good-enough for me, it depends on the style.
Great measuring tip! I will definitely employ that next time I feel the urge to go shopping...and buy in bulk if I find something that works. :)

Sharalyn Hartwell I just discovered something yesterday and I'm pumped about it. Women's Health magazine has a ton of free workouts you can download to your iPod. I think this is genius. I already bring my iPod to the gym, I don't want to bring paper with exercises jotted down and I definitely don't want to have to think of what to do next. I tried one of them on Saturday and my lower body is still in shock. Anyone else had success doing something like to shake up their gym routine?

Ryan Paugh Do you swear on your blog? Just read an article on NPR (http://n.pr/8Xtpst) about the emotional impact that profanity can have when used by authorities. They mentioned Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz and President Obama as examples. They also mentioned that strategic profanity doesn't work for every personality and that it should be used with discretion. I've dropped an F-bomb or two on my blog. I try not to do it a lot. What about you guys?

Meghan Skiff Summer is officially here and Pittsburgh is as hot and humid as ever! Hard to believe just a few months ago we were buried in snow! Anyway...how do you ladies cope with this sweltering heat when it comes to professional dress? I was in PHX/TUC a few weeks ago and sun dresses worked there, but most of the time they are a bit too casual to wear to the office in Pgh. Any suggestions on how to stay cool and professional chic?

One thing I'm sure of is that there is an opportunity to offend, unintentionally, both now and in the future. It's impossible to know all of the possible ways people might interpret your writing. I've chosen to be both cautious and edgy depending on the situation. Regardless of how good your judgment is, something is likely to be taken the wrong way. As long as you write things that you know you can defend (even if that defense means admitting that you were wrong), you're on the right path.

I lamented the fact that the ideas of religion, love, and sex have more or less taken over what is fundamentally a contract between two people and the government. The fact is two people can love each other and never marry just as easily as two people can marry and never love each other. Where the trouble comes in is when you decide love = marriage or a loveless marriage = divorce.

@Mike -- I hear that Seattle can be difficult for people who love the sun. I don't know if you have any indoor botanical gardens in your city, but when the weather sucks here in Madison my girlfriend and I go to the Boerner Botanical Gardens in Milwaukee and pretend that we're somewhere tropical. It's good for morale :)

Actually I feel like people are more focused when they are not in the office since all of the office politics are non-existent. Excellent communication skills and having a stellar staff is a must for telecommuting but if you structure it correctly and have the right equipment then there is no need to work face to face.

My current staff is positioned all over the east coast and works all different hours. We have our own internal community as well as video conferences and trainings to keep the communication flowing on a daily basis to ensure that we all stay connected.

I do have an office to go to but when I go in I am distracted by the office politics and social atmosphere and it takes a few hours off of my day where I could have been more productive.

For LinkedIn, I would prefer formal written recommendations. It would be beyond weird for me if anyone attempted that for Facebook. Plus, social media makes it easy to reciprocate. Managers need praise right back...when they're getting it, they're more apt to give.
