Anyone who is concerned about their business taking a long time to succeed, and considering wanthing to give up, read the blog "Is your Blog a Big Whiny Baby"? One of the best blogs I have read in a very long time, and as a Businesss Consultant I recommend it to everyone to read... Gives you some food for thought... Go on read it, and dont be scared....

How many of you keep magazines you buy? Do you throw them out when the new issue comes in or do you store them for reference later? I recently cleaned out my office and recycled a few boxes of old magazines. I still have boxes and boxes of old magazines, and it's a real inconvenience. I'm looking forward to when we actually can store all of this on an iPad or whatever... easy storage, easy cataloging, searching, article linking... this above the "futuristic looking" mags it's touting. Thoughts?

But if I could have all of that digitally, with an iPad to read it on, I'd be in heaven.
I do love myself some linear page format, and searchable pdfs of that stuff will be great. But the new Wired and other Conde Nast planned iPad versions are going to rock hard. 115 weeks ago

How wrong is this? Joel on Software stops blogging because it works too well? http://bit.ly/9Jhu3m I think he totally misses the point of his blog. BC is always pushing blogs as a way to become knownas an authority on a subject, and your opportunites grow from there. He seems to thnk it's only about attracting customers.

I guess what I'm dumbfounded by is that Joel doesn't try to broaden his current blog audience by expanding his topics. It's the idea of abandoning a loyal, proven audience that kind of drives me crazy.
All said, I'd bet there are other things going on that are causing him to stop. He does mention the company's grown too big for him to blog, but perhaps he just doesn't want to do it any more, plain and simple. Tomorrow (March 17) is his last post, and I'm very curious to see how he wraps it up. 114 weeks ago

All relationships end sooner or later whether by death, abandonment or remaining present but by all accounts ambivalent. No different than a marriage, you can't prevent someone from leaving you no matter how certain you are they're making a mistake. Don't you see? It is not about you/me/us. It's about him. Be glad for what he left us and wish him well. 114 weeks ago

Hey Penelope, I'm curious to know if you've seen this Atlantic article (http://bit.ly/bU4srO) about a "new jobless era," and what you think. Particularly the second page on "The Recession and America’s Youth." It takes some shots at Gen Y that I found surprising.

question: when managing a twitter account (for work or an organization), is it necessary to thank everyone for retweets? if should, should they be @ replies, DMs, or can they be bunched into lists? what about for #FF? I'm working to build a relatively new 'brand' for my grad program and hopefully a community around our subject matter (democracy and governance), and I see different organizations doing different things. advice would be great!

Hi everyone! Delta here...I am a nurse who is wanting to do something new to eventually get out of nursing. I am starting a resume writing biz. Google ads just called and i will now own "colorado resume writing" tag & and be on the front page guaranteed. this is the kick in the ass to get my website online soon. But the fear factor is rising. What if i'm not good enough, etc. how did you "feel the fear & do it anyway?" Tips to move through the fear of failure appreciated.

Dwell folding? http://bit.ly/cVATOm
Dwell is one of my favorite magazines - contemporary design and architecture, loved the photography, nothing to say bad about it. However, I haven't bought an issue in probably a year. Shelter mags have been dipping far before the recession hit - in a way, they were the precursor of the current problems.

It certainly can't hurt them, since I can't imagine too many magazines get a lot of money from selling back issues. 118 weeks ago

I wanted to shoot off a few good websites those of you interested may like (if you don't already visit them). www.aphotoeditor.com is a great site to visit to get inside the head of a magazine photo editor, with lots of advice from lots of working pros. www.magculture.com/blog is a great blog for people who really LOVE magazines, mostly European as it's written by Englishman Jeremy Leslie. Lastly, www.magazinedeathpool.com ... it's eerily funny.

One of my freelance gigs is consulting for a freelance web designer - I have a weekly call with him and we focus on his weekly schedule, time/project management, etc. But he's still struggling. I'd love to find a system that will work well for him - what are your favorite time management books or systems?

However, if your designer is a freelancer himself, be wary that simpler might be better - Basecamp might be unwieldy if he is principally working on a contractual basis, and Harvest, FreshBooks and the myriad of other project-based timetrackers might be better for him. My husband and employee is a designer and given the amount of space they must already give (to coding applications, Adobe software, test sites, FTPs, email, stock photo accounts, etc.) to their "workspace" on the screen, Basecamp's complex project management can be overwhelming. I have managed other designers who, as soon as they are asked to use such a system, become quickly distressed.
NOT because they are not computer savvy (he probably is extremely computer savvy) but because such software sometimes "throws them out" of the work they are doing. Simpler is better and if I were you, try it yourself first to ensure that you can explain it and assist him in applying it to his specific situation. Additionally Harvest, etc. provide invoicing in the same product which might be of great use to him! Good luck! Let me know what he uses (and if he likes it)! 118 weeks ago

I've used Basecamp before, and I don't think it's the right solution for this - his projects are fairly small, and he's a one-person team. Right now we're using todoist.com as a to-do list, broken down by project, and it's fine, but he's inconsistent about updating it. I think it's more an issue of mindset and focus, so I'm going to check out some of the books mentioned and see if I can come up with a creative, inspiring approach for him. 118 weeks ago
