David Spinks THIS WEEK'S TOPIC: The Ultimate Showdown: Grad School vs Professional Experience. Please bring your minds, but leave any weapons or blunt objects at home.

Many Director level and higher positions require a gradate degree to even be considered. Furthermore, Grad school gives people who aren't social butterflies a means to make great connections with other professionals.

On the other hand, with Web 2.0 becoming the standard instead of the "new thing", it is certainly possible to forge your own career path and forgo the grad degree.

It's generally agreed that unless you go to a top school (some defines that as top 4, some top 5, some top 10, some top 30. I don't think anyone defines it outside top 30), it's a waste of money. Waste of money in term not only tuition, but also opportunity cost in term of lost income. But, if you get financial assistance, that also helps the equation. (Some field requires an MBA to advance...)

David Spinks For lack of motivation and time, my blog has really taken a back seat over the past few months. It's been the biggest slump I've had since starting. Having you guys ever faced a slump like this one? How did you get past it?

When I have the time and inspiration I write posts in advance and schedule them for later, this helps smooth out the little peaks and troughs of inspiration and motivation. I also ALWAYS try and write something - anything - to make a deadline. If I post something awful (a) at least I've posted something and (b) I'm motivated to raise the levele of my writing.
If it's more of an existential blog crisis - is the reason you started the blog still relevant to you? Perhaps you don't need what you were getting out of it any more. Time to rethink the reasons you blogged, and what are good reasons now?

Cameron Plommer Hey guys. I want to develop my web development skill more. As in know how hosting works, CSS, HTML, other coding languages, and the ins and outs of Wordpress. Whats a good place to start? What are some resources you recommend (online, blogs, books). I know that best way is to just start experimenting, but I need some sort of structure. My skills are at the very basic level. Thanks

Shane Mac Alright, here is my observation from this group... (I love helping people with this stuff and ripping resume's apart). Almost all of you are asking before you are giving. You know how to get ideas for your resume? Download all of the other ones people have posted and then see how they are doing it. Provide feedback on theirs and then ask them what they could do for yours. This will give you more ideas, save time, show respect, and help you build better relationships with everyone in this group..

Ryan DeSort So, I'm currently on the hunt for a job and am in the process of a whole new resume makeover. How long should an "objective" typically be? Also, I took on many positions in my fraternity & university while at school, I currently have them each individually listed.. Should I keep it that way, condense it to just a general "XYZ Fraternity", or what do you think is best?

Excellent job featuring and quantifying your accomplishments!

You should probably reorganize the resume so that your college leadership experience appears in an umbrella "Work and Leadership Experience" category. Otherwise, 'Field Marketing Agent' is lonely as the only item under "Experience."

There are all sorts of opinions about handling or ignoring resume gaps... but a hiring manager is going to wonder what you've been doing since graduating in December 2008. How might you explain that?

Any of that would be helpful in filling in time gaps.

Agree with Karl on grouping your actual experience together to make the resume appear less scattered and sparse.

Also if you want to make your resume seem more relevant to today instead of focusing on the past, you might want to think about listing Work and Leadership first and education second. Just a thought!

That being said, many people aren't interested in the mundane and often-daunting tasks associated with maintaining a self-hosted WordPress installation. For those individuals, the free WordPress.com solution or a service such as Page.ly are better options. The latter does let users install plugins and themes, providing a greater degree of flexibility and customization.
