About Me

I am currently a doctoral student in Philosophy at the University of California, Riverside. While this is my "full time job" at present, I also teach at a variety of local four-year and community colleges in the greater Los Angeles area on the side. I teach Introductory courses in Philosophy, Ethics, and Critical Thinking. I'm on track to be a professional academic, but have been turning an eye toward the non-academic job sector in recent months. Are there any non-academic jobs out there for people who spend a lot of their time working through difficult arguments or reading arcane literature, mostly about how to live a life that makes a difference? You want to know just how arcane? My dissertation, which I am currently writing, is on the Aesthetic theory of St. Thomas Aquinas. For those outside of Philosophy, this means that I'm trying to piece together Aquinas' theory of beauty from generally aside-type comments he's made ranging over his 8 million-word corpus. I know. It sounds a little esoteric. People don't generally think about beauty anymore. They simply consume it. But the very fact that it is an integral part of our daily lives coupled with the fact that it is largely ignored in the market place of ideas seems odd to me. I suppose most people think the issue is settled. Beauty is, after all, in the eye of the beholder. Isn't it? Is it? I wonder.
