Scott Rossow Brazen Sales Family, a note to some of you (esp SMB folks) who are having trouble accessing decision makers and prioritizing sales cycles: If interested in a methodology/technology that demonstrates a communication automation between channels of Reps, Mktg Professionals and Clients. It keeps the Rep engaged throughout the comm. channel while keeping a 'hot / cold' interest-level gauge. This speaks to the diminishing effectiveness of cold-calling, if interested, send a note or respond here.

Susan Johnston Hello, I've been assigned to write an article on stretching an entry-level salary, so I figured who better to interview than my fellow BCers! My editor would like it to include a few anecdotes from recent grads (Class of '06 or more recently) who've come up with wacky ways to save money. Maybe you go to art openings for the free wine and cheese? Or you've found a way to make your own shampoo and conditioner? Nothing illegal please! Email me at Susan AT susan-johnston.com if you'd like to share.

My girlfriend (and I but mostly my girlfriend) shop at consignment shops for home-goods like lamps, furniture, and decorative junk. I'll chime in with my experience and far-from-expert advice: First of all, I'd recommend being active on sites like Brazen and LinkedIn, keeping a professional reputation and spending a small amount of time building relationships and networking. Second, I would cherish the time you have left, drink beers, do things that young non-college-students cannot get away with, and focus on finding something that you would actually enjoy doing for a living. Much like Ryan, I focused more on beers than anything else but small things like building a reputation, blogging, or professional networking do not take much time and can certainly help in the long run.

Looking forward to hearing other thoughts.

Cameron Plommer I have been a rabid classic rock fan my entire life. But, nothing is new. I've heard it all before. So I recently started experimenting with new music. I am now addicted to three songs: "Staring at the sun" by TV on the radio; "pursuit of happiness" by Kid Cudi; and "Into The Hollow" by Queens of the Stone age. Notice I said songs, not bands. I'm finding that I only like certain songs and can't find a band that I love all their songs, except Them Crooked Vultures. Anyone feel this way?

I can't say I feel the same exact way but over the years I have definitely found myself getting worse and worse music-ADD and having a hard time listening to too much of one artist in a row. Back when CDs were the standard, I could listen to an entire disc or album but now, I can barely listen to 2 or 3 songs of one artist in a row without wanting some variety.

Also, I definitely can't think of a band where I love all their songs... I think you're getting a little greedy there, man. hah

Scott Rossow This topic was brought up elsewhere but I wanted to address appropriately here: music choices and productivity. For me, the types of music I listen to has a huge impact on my productivity level. Some of my favorite music styles are awful for me to listen to when I work... hard rap, D'Angelo / John Legend / Anthony Hamilton R&B and Soul, and vocal or fusion/'out there' jazz are all too distracting. My best work-music is quick-paced instrumental (no vocals are key) jazz. What about you guys?

Jambands used to be my go-to but it's hard for me to find faster-paced Jamband stuff and the slower music slows the pace of my work. Some Galactic and String Cheese used to do the trick though. Thought I may be getting lazy in my work, but I think the main issue for me is that my work is self-paced, deadlines are soft, and nobody really hold me accountable. In a traditional workplace there is a lot of pressure from expectations to stay focused and "work" and that if we're not focused we're not productive. I know from myself that I put a lot of pressure on myself to be focused when I'm working at home and the reality is that I too fall prey to distractions of all varieties. I learned it from Mike Dillard here:

http://nmccallum.blackbeltrecruiting.com

If you want to opt in to the free intro messages you will find value in them. The Blackbelt Recruiting course is well worth the $125 or so if you decide to go and buy the actual course. Money back if you don't think so. This course changed my business overnight- because it brought a change between my ears.

It has to do with control, posture, and human psychology. When you do the "take away", people realize they are not in control, and then they wonder what they are possibly missing out on. I tell people no all the time and I love it. Works for me and thousands of others who are using it!

The article only proves the point that the difference between indie and major is that other level of promotion. If you're gonna sign with a label just to promote you by buying radio time and setting up publicity stunts (Kanye West and Taylor Swift) so that they can take your sales royalties and touring money, shouldn't you just sign directly with a promoter and run your own label a la Madonna and live nation? Two things need to happen in the new reality of the music business. Artists need to get better educated, and labels need to come up with a smarter model cuz right now it makes more sense for an artist to sign with The House of Blues or another concert promoter than with Sony.

In my opinion, it will take something drastic and extreme (like this) for small and independent labels to start making money again. It's very difficult with the technology changing so constantly. Most online / social media / forum or discussion-board interactions have a healthy level of disagreements and head-butting and until now I haven't seen this sauciness on Brazen, regardless of the possible over-reacting going on.

Anyway, to answer the question, Penelope's network is very active and so is the Personal Branding group. I'll use your recommendation as a kick-in-the-a$$ to start posting more myself though. There's no question that the 'wheeler-and-dealer' network SHOULD be more active.
