Best of luck--I hope things are starting to come around. 112 weeks ago

Kia ora from New Zealand! I'm a teacher and a writer and I'm trying to become location independent, lose the teaching job, and write full time. Any writers on here?

Actually, 'popular lit fic' might be a good way to describe the genre I'm into.

I have to say most every opportunity I was offered came out of the blue or I shot off a resume knowing I wasn't anywhere near qualified for the position. Somehow those seem to be the ones that catch you off-guard. Not many today are working anywhere near their chosen field of study or major(s). We are in a very strange time in history where everyone with a camera is a photographer...anyone with a live blog is a journalist. Difficult to have a voice in a seemingly endless sea of shouters. Shine!

It seems like it's mostly about resumes now. From what I can tell, at least in my area, it's all experience over quality. I mean, yes, experience means you've been gathering the skills you need to theoretically do the job, but what about stagnation? What about those who are okay, but not good?
And more importantly in my view, what about those just starting out? There seems to be no room for us, except in the mailroom. 132 weeks ago

The mailroom's a good place to start. It's never easy breaking into journalism. I came late to it, nine years after graduating. After resigning from a job I hated, I spent weeks ringing round local and firing off my CV. Eventually a local free newspaper offered me unpaid work experience. Within three days, I had my big break. There was an IRA attack on my town and I was one of the first people on the scene. My story was the splash that week and I haven't really looked back since. 132 weeks ago

Ty,
That's an interesting question. I have written feature pieces in newspapers, I have written tech manuals, poetry, travel pieces, and nearly everything else. I write. It's a critical piece of my life's large puzzle. I am a documentarian, I think. Yeah, I'll go with documentarian. I carry 4 items only on my journey; a netbook, an iPhone, a rugged, water-proof DSLR and something to write with. Boy, do I need job. LOL-
What about you?

I use a Pentax K20D that I have banged around for almost 2 years. It's weather-proof (just back from Niagara Falls..no issues getting soaked) I take a wide angle and a 200mm kit lens. When I need to go light, like overseas, I take an inexpensive, unsophisticated HD camcorder. Unless I'm getting paid for shots..I go cheap. I have a great memory..haha..free 133 weeks ago

Now I have to look into a rugged DSLR of my own to survive random adventures... Thanks for sharing the info on the Pentax K20D! 133 weeks ago

Hi all! Just wanted to add my GenX woes and hopes. In the last year I went from an invited guest at Obama's Inauguration to losing my marriage, 2 daughters, home, and career. All at 41y/o. Soon I may be homeless. With no formal education (as I learned photography as a trade), things are looking bleak. I am frantically trying to network here and elsewhere looking for hope, guidance and maybe an angel somewhere...Any ideas would be greatly appreciated...really.

Hi all! My name is Scott Palmer and I am a former newspaper reporter/photographer. Current events have driven me to close my small photo studio and I have decided at 41y/o to start my life over and take another tack. I have freelanced as a content writer for GOOGLE and DEMAND Media and found the work less than...well...fulfilling. Hoping to network and find a new path on this new journey. Nice to meet everyone...

We might be in the same boat. I've decided to start life over at mid-life and as a former newspaper reporter/photographer, I am hoping to network here and find my next path on this life journey. If ever there was a person that desperately needs to be 'location independent', it's me...LOL
I can't go back to being a cog in the capitalistic world..LOL~ Let's hope there is an angel in here somewhere to offer guidance. I'm ready to go... 133 weeks ago
