Cameron Plommer I want get feedback on an idea I have I think a lot of high school and college grads are at a real disadvantage when they enter the real world. School ignores so many practical skills and doesn't push students to be remarkable. I'd like to set up some kind of school, workshop or program that gives students the information, resources and motivation to be remarkable people. Which in turn will hopefully lead to better people and employees. Thoughts. Criticism. Business partners???

Rebecca Thorman I work for a start-up where the dress code is very casual. I'm usually the most dressed up, just because I like to. I'm wondering, how does personal appearance change the way you think about someone? If someone is wearing a suit and a tie is that better than jeans? Does it affect your brand?

For instance, if you wear a pant suit and nice blouse and then realize your clients are more casual, you can always take off your suit jacket to become more casual. On the flip side, it's harder to dress "up" a polo shirt and jeans if you find out your clients are more traditional.

Scott Carver Each step I take in starting my IT support/consulting business, which has started, seems to be a challenge. Fun challenges though. I've installed a CRM package & now trying to determine how detailed to define my services. I've looked at service catalog templates and think that's too much. How detailed do I want to be in my billing/tracking? Anyone struggled with that? Ex. BOS-1 is Business Onsite Service, but I don't think that's detailed enough for the service done. Hope that makes sense.

Scott Rossow As salespeople, what are your biggest day-to-day frustrations with selling? Mine is definitely the trend of people not answering their phones. I leave voicemails to try and combat this inevitable theme but voicemails can only be so effective and even the best voicemails have a tiny response-rate. Other frustrations?

I learned it from Mike Dillard here:

http://nmccallum.blackbeltrecruiting.com

If you want to opt in to the free intro messages you will find value in them. The Blackbelt Recruiting course is well worth the $125 or so if you decide to go and buy the actual course. Money back if you don't think so. This course changed my business overnight- because it brought a change between my ears.

It has to do with control, posture, and human psychology. When you do the "take away", people realize they are not in control, and then they wonder what they are possibly missing out on. I tell people no all the time and I love it. Works for me and thousands of others who are using it!

TOP IDEA: Josh Swindle Thank you notes! Stop using your companies pre printed thank you notes. You know the ones i'm talking about, everything is done for you and all you have to do is sign your name. Hand write a thank you note! Hand writing is much more personal and it shows you care.

We plan on working with them in the near future, just focused on getting some other things in place first. I really like the idea, since I used to do stamping and embossing of cards, was a lot of fun at the time, but don't have time any more, and like the idea of still being able to do the personal touch without lugging out all my craft supplies and stamping for 5 hours non stop- LOL For now I still have some personal cards left and am using them- and everyone comments on how much they like them.

Privacy is definitely a concern, however most legitimate companies take a substantial amount of security precautions. However Anthony is right anything online can be hacked, however unlikely, so the question for you is; Is this an acceptable risk?

Credit card companies get hacked seems like all the time in some form or another. I mean, if I installed something locally it's still only as secure as my house, my pc, my passwords, etc. There is a point where "worrying" about security could drive a person to live in a log cabin with no power 100 miles away from civilization.
I decided against myERP but it wasn't because of the security risk. I'm going to be using QB Online for accounting and I'll have to find a separate CRM/service ticket system.

Scott Carver I preparing an email for potential clients. Some I have worked for previously through another firm. These clients trusted my work and requested my services a majority of the time. Some that that will receive it I haven't worked for. Question. Should the email basically be a mini-resume? Introducing myself, my company, my experience, my efficiencies etc. The business is PC/Network support. I've been doing this for 16 years for the Man. Time to be my own Man. The market is good in the area.

A little more than a quick note, but not so much of a resume. I did have on there what my capabilities are, a link to the website and a thank you for your time.
After I sent the first one, I got a call within 15 minutes and have work scheduled for tomorrow. Pretty awesome feeling.
I had neck surgery in Jan and lost my job that same month. Ready to start working for me instead of the man. So far, so good :)I'll sure need folks like you guys around though.
Thanks for your insights!

The something something shuts down in your brain. i.e. rest and activity are the steps to progress :)

@Zach thanks. I'm trying to think of some offbeat qs. Basic M.O.: put aside all the BS job q's and ask q's that I love answering myself (because I have good answers to them). If their answers match up, then we're on the same page. Then I just have to decide if I want to go the "same page" route or the "variety/balance" route.

Zachary Stark Jones: I think you want to have a mix of standard / formal questions, then transition into an offbeat portion. You want to put forth capability, which ...MoreI think you want to have a mix of standard / formal questions, then transition into an offbeat portion. You want to put forth capability, which is the normal practice of q's; obviously you want to challenge people and have some questions that you expect would be beyond the ability of those you're interviewing. They flag the rare person that can answer them, and for the test they should paint a path of professional growth during tenure - you an take care that they do not belittle or make the person feel incapable by communicating, in closing that portion of the interview q's, a reinforcement of what those questions are designed to do: paint the road forward. The offbeat q's then get them out of the interview-mode and get them revealing their true passions and nature.

Read up on some NLP if you haven't. Listen to their use of words and look for negs, inhibition, and thinking-models that their language belies. Note those during the interview. Decide which can help or hurt and ask your next questions to confirm strengths or weaknesses to business issues relative to their nature. This forms the basis of your professional mentorship and employee / peer coaching.

I do these things in my own business process, and for my clients. Let me know if you turn out to need help in these areas.

Scott Carver Easy question. Starting up a home based business providing PC/Network support for home/home office/small business market. Needing a printer for invoicing, scanning, copying etc. Not faxing. I've looked at and worked with both laser and inkjet MF printers but not extensively. What do you use, laser or inkjet multifunction printer? Model? Do you like/recommend it? Which do you think is better, laser or inkjet?

116 weeks ago from Entrepreneurs

Scott Carver: Lindsey, http://trustedreviews.com is what I think, was ...MoreLindsey, http://trustedreviews.com is what I think, was one of the better sources for reviews that I've found. I've found an MFP laser and inkjet but I'm just having hard time determining which would be better.

Jennifer, the laser MFP that I've been looking at happens to be a Brother. The Brother MFC-7840W seems to have lots of good reviews, it's not a color printer but at this point I don't think that matters.

Michael, faxing is another issue. Not sure whether I want an online service or an actual fax machine. Leaning toward a fax service.

Will, I'm partial to HP for all types of printers. Just not a big fan of their prices usually. I think Brother is comparable to the HP from what I've been able to tell in the past. But, do you think inkjet would be OK for invoicing? I've never been down this road with printers. I can see them smearing or what not while going through the USPS in the rain and such. But the price difference in a good laser MFP and a good inkjet MFP is what is making this a bit of a difficult decision for me. And it's such a small issue. :)

Lindsey Donner: Thanks for the detailed response, Scott! I'm going out and buying a printer tomorrow. I'll report back with my thoughts after a month or so. ;-)
