Brief summary of Trunk's Resume boot camp: Don't put every job on resume, tell a story. Be creative, don't lie. Add achievements, not job descriptions. Bullet points, not short descriptions. Gaps in resume good (shows time for self learning & breaks). Always add a short, basic cover letter that lists 3 recent accomplishments. Use "increase"/"decrease" to refer to accomplishments at a job. 15% is a good estimate for percent improvement, but don't overuse the number. Hire career coach for an hr.

@Demetra, as someone with caribbean heritage who is american, I'm interested in building organizations to address problems both abroad and domestically. I think the building begins with the idea. Once you devise an approach to solving a particular problem in a community, it becomes a little easier to take the next step because then you can learn from people who are solving the same problem or are using the same approach you are. Do you have an idea of what your enterprise will adress?

Still in undergrad (Dartmouth), but interning at the Clinton Foundation in New York this fall and learning lots about market-based approaches to global health and economic development. Would love to pursue a career in the area, but feel a bit presumptuous opining on the subject when I've never traveled outside Europe and North America. Anybody have experience with or recommendations for worthwhile international volunteer ventures?

However I did find some interesting social work/community development opportunities that either covered my expenses or deffered my debt. I was a finalist for a fellowship at the Island Institute in Maine, which is an AMAZING program (domestic). I simply ask about these practical things because the path for someone with financial burden and someone who has no debt is different. 128 weeks ago

At Volunteer Support Network we place volunteers with a number of economic development organizations in Uganda, and many have used our fundraising guide to successfully cover their costs. www.volunteersupportnetwork.org. Or for a long term financially supported placement try Peace Corps or VSO. 128 weeks ago

Does anyone know of any social networks that connect volunteers to volunteers, fundraisers, investors, donors, etc.?

I'd suggest looking for npo boards to sit on. They need financial advice and know how and are a good way to get your name out there. 143 weeks ago

Which is more beneficial: 5 yrs in 1 nonprofit involved in 1 area, or 5 yrs with 3 diff orgs in different areas? Would love your thoughts!

Depends on what your passion is. Many organizations like a person having a passion towards their area of expertise: kids, mental health etc 143 weeks ago

I think it depends if you know what you want! If not, diversify. If you do, then work your way up in 1 organisation 143 weeks ago

What books are everyone reading? I tend to favor leadership ones, but there is so much rich information out there that I'm not aware of
