Raina Hi All. I was interviewed at a small company recently that is looking to launch a database to keep pharma companies aware of what's happening with various pipeline products, ie, where the product is in its development. The woman who developed the database wants to market it to pharma companies, but she's stretched thin. Would social media marketing help her to get the word out about her product? Would so appreciate your insights and help.

You would never market a product in development that wasn't FDA-approved to consumers. The government would shut you down, your stock price would plummet, etc. No offense, but if it were legal, companies would already be doing it. The SEC, FDA, and FTC would all be on your a--. Think business-to- business marketing, not direct-to-consumer.

If you're a small pharma company with an innovative product, but not enough capital to launch DTC campaigns and the like, you'd want your company to be acquired by a bigger company. The database that tracks products in development could only ever be a b2b product. Hope that makes sense. If you want to learn more about the pharma world, pre-consumer, let me know. I'd be happy to chat.

Eric Ungs I am curious to know your price. What is the most you would pay, as a one time fee, to be able to use Facebook, Twitter, or any other major social network site? Or would you just be up in arms it's not FREE and go somewhere else.

I guess the harsh reality of this space, much like anything else in this fast paced society, is the noise isn’t going anywhere and it comes with the territory. After all there is just way too much data bouncing around within these spaces.

@Andrea V. Lewis: That’d be about my price range as well. From a business perspective, think of the revenue stream you’d be able to generate following the pay scale of mobile apps. The couple of dollars to have a premium service doesn’t even cross my mind to pay for and download because the value and convenience it serves. It’s a one time deal and it’s a billion dollar industry.

@Kristina Summers: I do agree the social networks would lose a lot of accounts. But, Twitter for instance; think of the number of inactive accounts. Those accounts who stand stagnant and have less than 10 followers; it’s a mind boggling number. I think those would be the users most likely not to pay and leave shop. So I honestly don’t think you’d see a huge dent in Twitter with those who actually use the service, it’d be those who just have an account.
Great feedback everyone, I appreciate the conversation.

Alison Rayner There's nothing that frustrates me more than out of date dress codes. It seems like a feeble attempt to hold on to the past. For example, when I worked in sales at a hotel, peep toe shoes were held in the same regard as showing up in your pjyamas! I believe that if you're working hard & well and are good at your job, why do organizations need archaic dress codes to try to keep their people in line? Especially in a fashion-forward office.

I definitely agreed with dressing to impress for clients. I found that the people in charge of setting the dress code applied their own experiences, beliefs, and prejudices to evaluating what was appropriate & what wasn't. I'm sure that's ok in some situations, but in mine it was a downer.

Fashion is difficult for any one person to police or set up guidelines on because style can be so personal & evoke such strong responses. For example, I wore a pair of black skinny pants with a shimmer, paired with a cute empire waisted jacket & pumps at a gala event full of people from the advertising industry. I received compliments on my outfit that night, but two weeks later I wore the same thing to a gala for the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise and a lady asked if I was pregnant. Two totally different reactions based on the impression my jacket made on two very different groups of people.

Very interesting. Can you give me an example of the kind of project you'd take on?

I'd imagine the hardest part of freelancing in that industry is connecting with companies that are making enough money to buy your services but are still small enough to need them / that you want to work with them.

One of the keys to growth in my mind is scalable operations. In the beginning you have people do all the minutia and that is fine because people are cheaper than automation. Later on those people who know all the processes are far more valuable to you if they can focus more on the 'critical few' instead of the 'trivial many' and if their 'functionally mandatory' is as quick as possible.

I like your contest idea, Ryan, especially because it could create more content for the site. Since it's a community of former New Yorkers, maybe it could be a simple question like "what does it mean to be an Ex-New Yorker?" - in 100 words or less? or in haiku form!

But I'm not really sure how that would help us with our branding. There seems to be a fine line between asking members for input vs. giving them too much authority over the site's direction. Very tricky!

If an employer understands that people freelance because they enjoy it, they support it more. Just make it clear that you do not intend to compete with your 8-5.

Sara I've been a freelance writer for a few years now, mostly doing features for print and web publications.
