Hey AC, thanks for your reply!
I just checked out the company website and am interested in the business development and marketing roles. But I only saw advertised vacancies for French, German and Spanish natives. I'm a native English speaker with proficient Mandarin. Do you know anyone I can contact at SIP to ask about possible future openings?

Samantha J Hello folks, I'm helping a small company use social media to improve its corporate image. Firstly, I plan to revamp its website, which I think is too cluttered and could benefit from being made cleaner& simpler in design. The company has a pioneering product, &I want the website to focus on that. Trouble is, I'm quite new to the web development field. Would anyone who knows more mind glancing at the current website, and giving me your first impressions re, design? Thanks! :) www.krete.co.uk

Penelope Trunk What do you think about changing your last name when you get married? I can't believe people do it, actually. I mean, you have an established track record in the workplace by the time most people get married. Why undermine yourself by telling people to call you another name? I have had so much trouble with my own name changes (people googling the wrong name, for instance) I can't believe people bring this on themselves. the practice strikes me as antiquated.

It had a lot to do with forging my own identity.

In a historical sense, surnames used to be a lot more descriptive of a person, which is why most surnames translate into medieval professions, locations, and traits.

Samantha J Hello folks, I recently graduated with a master's in international management, &am curious about working as a communications officer. I was previously a business strategy consultant, but also have experience in writing/editing reports, producing marketing materials, website updating, promoting products via social media, &online reputation management. Do you think these skills would help me to enter the field of communications? Thx from Belgium! :)

Michael Wessel Greetings everyone. I was wondering if any of you happened to know a good intensive Chinese school within China. I will be traveling there for a decent time but would also like to study the language. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Firstly, you don't need to pay western prices to find a decent Chinese programme. I studied mainly in the northeast of China (Dalian) and split my time between studying intensive grammar and characters at a Chinese university, and conversational Mandarin at a private school. I would highly recommend Dalian as a good place to study Mandarin, as the north-easterners speak fairly standard Mandarin, and the city is a pleasant, clean and modern environment. If you're interested in Dalian, I can give you contact details for some language schools. Just let me know. Cheers, Sam

Samantha J Thanks for creating this network, its just what I was looking for! I'm about to finish a Master's degree in business and economics, which includes topics on international finance and accounting. Apart from this, I have no previous financial background. Before starting this course I worked in I.T. - doing project management and customer service. Do you have any recommendations for a suitable first job in finance?

Many large companies hire at the Master's level for financial rotational programs. Analyst positions can also work nicely, especially if you have a technical background - the combination of finance and tech skills is a hot commodity. I'm a big advocate of working with your college Career Services Center, as they know which companies are looking for your talents and can help make the introduction for you. You'll want to highlight any financial projects you've done in school, in lieu of work experience on your resume. Also, I'm on the North American Staffing Team for Citi - but we may have positions internationally that would be a fit for you, so feel free to check jobs.citigroup.com. Best wishes!

Samantha J Hi all, I've been tinkering with my resume recently and now it's time to put it out there for some criticism. Comments on the 'Languages' and 'Interests' sections would be especially welcome, as I've always been unsure about the best way to integrate these areas. A few suggestions: when you say "analysed detailded business processes..." we need more info. what processes? what were the results? in other words, you solved a problem so what came of your analyses? Another place is " trained staff in biz english..." how many peeps did you train? what global project? results? so you see where i'm going with this. more specifics and more results...and i agree with you on the branding tag line. try to boil yourself down to a concentrated few words as this will set you up for success. i like the interests section with corresponding conferences. you sound like a very cool business woman. good luck with this as you tighten up your resume...you will be an asset to any company.
