Ryan Paugh Even though I'm currently living in Madison, WI I'd really love to move back to the East Coast soon to be near more friends and family. I've sold my girlfriend on the idea of coming with me. Her first pick is somewhere in North Carolina. My first pick is somewhere in/around Boston, MA. She thinks Boston is too cold + doesn't have enough of an artsy scene. I guess I'm not really sure. I figured I'd leave it up to the experts. Any thoughts guys?

Mehul Kar Need serious advice: I have a newsletter to teach tennis with a bunch of subscribers in high school. Apparently, these subscribers don't really check their email.. I'm tempted to switch the newsletter into a Facebook page and write the letters as notes. I lose exclusivity and it means I get fans who are not really fans. Which means conversion rate when I want to sell a product (tennis lessons) is lower than with a dedicated mailing list. What should I do?

I get that you want a "fight-club" feel to your group, that gets known by viral marketing. If you want to do that you have to be a true pro AND have something really hot and fresh to offer. Probably not something you can develop overnight unless you really have that level of expertise.

Your alternative method is to see all sources as your tool than a trip-up. You need to consider the medium and use it accordingly:
1) fb=large masses, frequent contact, less control. Letting your product go 'viral' and more out of control can be a good thing here. Reaches people you never could have otherwise, and it can be the litmus for how well your audience likes your product depending on how many 'like' your page. Check this source frequently to keep pulse of your company.
2) text (maybe)=more real-time notices, more personalized. Kind of like a limited pass to an private party, etc. Nice for some, annoying for others, matter of preference. Also note if they dont have text service.
3) email=where you have your content fully fleshed out and keep your current customers hooked. (fb is where you hook new ones)
Bottom line for u now seems to be, if people are really not reading your emails like you say, examine your content again. Layout is important too, but if you want to build an exclusive club where people are supposed to be clamouring to get in (isnt that the whole idea of exclusivity, demand>supply?), your content needs to be at that level too.

This is a v interesting problem. Good luck! Keep us updated.

Megan & Valerie: Sorry for the very late reply!

What I found out, is what Ryan also suggested; It really depends on how much marketing budget you want to spend for your blog and if you think it really is worth it. For a personal blog, I really don't feel the cost-value ratio would be good enough to start paying for clicks in this case. For a online product store, the payoff might be worth it, but "just" for a blog - I don't personally feel it's a deal worth trying.

Hope this helps a bit! :)

Running a CPM ad targeted at only a few thousand people will give you high saturation, and lead to all the clicks you can get with that ad (trying different ad photos / text is a must), very quickly for very little cost.

These are some really good questions.

In many ways, I think that departments inhibit work. With departments, there are turf wars and other things to contend with.

Honestly, I think it's best to cherry pick or ask for people interested in joining a team of people who are passionate about social media.

Might as well find the people who would like to be involved and capitalize on their passion.

Barbara Hall I'm having a major issue at work - ongoing for 3+ yrs. 2 women - Boomers - do not like me, and show zero respect no matter what I do, or how hard I work. Its just never good enough for them. One doesn't want me to learn her duties but then complains that I don't help her. I overheard their convo today and they are planning some sort of sabotage. Also, one does payroll & disclosed my salary/raise to the other. In previous incidents, it was brought to my boss' attention, but swept under the rug.

First, I would do many searches on myself and find out exactly what's out there so there's no surprises thrown your way. Then I'd group the content into two groups - 1) stuff directly said or uploaded by self and 2) other content about yourself said or uploaded by other people. Stuff said or done by other people about yourself is their story or opinion. It's up to you how important it is. If there's stuff you've said or done in the past online that you regret or wouldn't do now, I would say that's life and just keep moving forward with the lessons you have learned. Of course, if there are certain things that really concern you, I would recommend addressing them. Not all things, though, you still want to appear 'human'. :) One other thing - I think the thing that would bother me the most would be a curve ball thrown by an interviewer for a job I was seeking based on info that was found online and it surprised me and I wasn't prepared to answer it.

@Ryan, ditto on the quality people. But you quickly become one of them in the sense you never have time. You learn how to weed out the not quality ones fast and focus on the ones you have time for. So when I do make a quality connection, I feel really good about myself. I've been told by people here that I friend everyone. It's more that I know how flaky people are here. I give everyone a chance and once I make a decision about someone then I decide if I have time. It can take 5 seconds to decide or 3 months. It all makes for great stories either way.

Also I think you make a really good point about keeping up with people here. You don't necessarily know straight away who is going to be a quality, rewarding person or contact in your life, but it's better to start with the benefit of the doubt, and move on quickly once you know it's a 'no deal'.

Here are the things that I would do if I were the community manager for the Cavs:

1) I would grab two or three other front office people and personally email or call each and every season ticket holder and let them know that the team still greatly cares about them. I'd also open up the opportunity for them to have input in to the types of pregame, in-game and post game promotions that would attract them to come out to as many games as they can next season.

2) The Cavs GM has to put together a sign and trade deal for someone like Tony Parker or Chris Paul or possibly even a deal that would get Carmelo Anthony out of the last year of his contract with Denver. Get the GM in front of a camera or start leaking documents without releasing names on who they're trying to sign. Make this the opportunity for connected fans to have information earlier than the general public.

3) If I thought there was no chance of the Cavs signing a top name player for this next season, I would begin piecing together a sponsorship set that would give every fan that attended more than 10 home games (verified by check-ins on Foursquare and/or Gowalla) a gift dependent on the number of games that the team won. Each 5 games opens up a new sponsorship. The fewer the wins the more awesome the gift.

Here's one derivative: If they are the worst team in NBA history, everyone who attends more than 21 home games (half of all home games) would get season tickets next year regardless where you sat. The bonus is that these season ticket holders would be grouped into a defined section of the stadium and given premium status and be key in the marketing of the team much like student sections have in college sports.

**Use the extra capital generated by all these folks coming to the final games to get a TOP free agent and TOP draft pick next year.

Someone should bug Sam Taggart over at Vaynermedia to get in here and tell us what he'd do since one of his clients this last season was the Nets, only the third worst team EVER in the NBA. I'd be interested to hear his thoughts.

I don't care who you are selling social media too, this point always resonates.

Social media, no matter how you look at it, is simply an extension of the communications channel. If you choose to ignore it - you are simply accepting the fact that you are opting to lose the ability to communicate with a large group of individuals. A good communications mix utilizes multiple touch points, one of which is now social media.
