Nikita T. Mitchell I recently wrote a post called 3 Reasons Why Every Young Professional Should Serve on a Nonprofit Board (http://bit.ly/kxvmge). I'm now working on a follow-up post b/c of how many people have asked for advice in response, and I would love to know more about your experiences: Have you ever served on a nonprofit board? If yes, what advice do you have for other young professionals looking for such an opportunity. If no, why not?

The important thing is to remember that there is a difference between "work" and "vocation." For those with a vocation, I can see how it might be easy for lines to blur. But I believe that the majority of the population does not have a vocation. And if you only work, even if you consider it a career, then your fulfillment will come from outside of your job and it makes sense to keep the two separate.

At times, I think I have balance in my life. I am able to adequately manage the things at work while still maintaining my lifestyle (ex: going to the gym, seeing friends, traveling etc) but there are also times when I don't have it and am not able to do those things. While its not ideal, I know that when I don't have great balance that it will come back, but if it goes on for too long of a stretch then I know I need to either do or say something to fix it.

TOP IDEA: Ty Unglebower Today I am beginning the process of unfollowing, and unsubscribing, and just plain giving up on some of the "must follow!" gurus, blogs, Twitter feeds and websites I sort of fell for in 2010. Actually I didn't totally fall for all of them, but I was acting on the water cooler premise that if I read what everyone else read, I'd have more to talk about and hence more to network about. But it was inauthentic. I'm tired. No more "Godin-like" sites for me without some unique appeal.

This is particularly a problem with Twitter...before you know it you're following way too many people (especially the "gurus") and absorbing absolutely nothing in terms of content that is sincerely relevant to you. Do something about it?! Those same managers need to learn how to effectively deal with their employees. Instead of complaining they don't know how to be part of a team, why don't they show them?
It's a big transition - going from school, being nurtured, etc. to working with people who all think they are right. Everyone has different personalities...there are MANY older people who do not like working in teams. It's a personality thing, not a generation thing. But someone needs to blame someone, so the earliest generation in the workforce gets blamed and stereotyped. Typical.

Ryan Healy Thomas Friedman just wrote a piece about "The Start Up Of You" definitely give it a read - http://nyti.ms/oQpu7Q - This really resonated with me, and its something everyone in their twenties needs to come to grips with. If you're not a rockstar, you're not going to make it very long. It's too easy to outsource, automate, or replace you. So make sure you're always learning, adapting, changing, innovating and challenging the status quo!

Thanks for the post Ryan.

Maybe I am missing something here, but between my Google Profile and Google Buzz conversations, might I not already have a Social Resume?

Also, I would be VERY interested in seeing the rate and timeline of adoption by hiring managers and recruiters/sourcers of Social Resumes. And, how do you capture the info on a Social Resume into one of those dinosaur-like things called Applicant Tracking Systems that everyone still seems to be using?

I LOVE this stuff- it's getting the culture transformation going which is the tough part.

That was our thought process behind the concept of our Social Resumes. Hopefully, you start putting them all on your Social Resume. As far as planning goes, I try to leave it at just jotting down notes. If you can't focus on what you're doing full time, its not going to work. The other ideas can wait.

@Suzy - Good points. Your Google profile and Google Buzz conversations are just like conversations you have on any other network, they get lost after a few days. Sure, people can really dig to go find them but that's a lot of work, and most people probably won't take the time to go past the first 1 or 2 links they see. I'm also very interested to see the adoption rate of hiring managers and recruiters etc. Obviously as the product matures, we'll need to address issues like capturing info in ATS's. We already have some thoughts but the real challenge now is to get the word out!

Rebecca Thorman I'm an inbox zero fan (clearing your inbox to zero every day), but found that I was also obsessively checking and responding to emails. Now, in addition to inbox zero, I've only been checking my email and Google Reader three times a day (7:30 am-9:30 am, 1-1:30 pm, 5-5:30pm) and literally closing those browser tabs when it's not one of those three times. Hi Rebecca. One thing I've done is unsubscribe from ANY email newsletter that hits my Inbox.

I've unsubscribed from email alerts from Brazen, Facebook, Twitter, so I can view those messages and interact when I'm actually using those sites.

As for Google Reader, I check it maybe ONCE or TWICE a week, at most. That way, I can catch up and read interesting posts all at one shot.

Lastly, I've disabled email notifications on my phone, so I have to open the relevant applications.

It seems to be working!
