Penelope Trunk discussed the issue of privacy in a blog post (http://blog.penelopetrunk.com/2010/04/23/were-nearing-the-end-of-email-m...), but I'm wondering whether there isn't a price to pay for being an "early adopter," and putting your information in a public forum with no protective layers. What do you think about the evolution of privacy within the social media sphere? Do you agree that it might cease to exist entirely? Or is there potential for a real backlash, starting with Facebook?

I definitely agree with you that the things we don't share are becoming non-negotiable privacy requirements, but... WHAT are the things we don't share at this point? Short of my passport and social security numbers, there are few things I haven't been asked to share on social media sites.

I'm wondering, as an extension of the original question, what this all means for the future of social media. I personally would like to see a more private successor for Facebook (something along the lines of what Facebook was when it first started), but it does seem like the currents would take any new site in the same direction: little privacy.

I see the value in increased information sharing; it certainly makes the world a smaller place and can bring you closer to like-minded individuals everywhere in the world... but the Web isn't just a carefree playground full of potential friends. There are security risks involved as well.

What do you think?

I think, however, that "privacy" may be a slightly wrong prism to be viewing this through. If we accept that all should have access to the Internet, and that all will have differing needs for privacy (some personal, some externally-prescribed), then what we need is not some all-encompassing definition of what is private and what is public, but CONTROL over what we release about ourselves, control that may be exercised differently in different environments. This is where Facebook is/was getting it wrong - promising one thing, and then changing it in a non-obvious way. Of course all social networks with a financial imperative will want to keep us in their silo, and extract as much information as they can from us - and at the moment (because we don't have a great deal of control) we have a binary choice - tell all, or tell nothing (in relative terms - we always have to give up some information, otherwise it's pointless joining the service!).
There are a couple of alternatives to (e.g.) Facebook that I know of (and have supported via a small donation): Diaspora (http://www.joindiaspora.com) and Appleseed (http://appleseedproject.org/). Both have a similar aim - to decentralise and control our own data. I'm watching with interest, although they both require a little more technical interaction than many may be comfortable with - that's a challenge for both projects :)

Ryan Healy John Mayer says Twitter is overrated, Tumblr is the future of Social Networking because it's about intelligent conversation http://bit.ly/diKKRx. he makes a great point. Anyone else notice that Twitter is getting very crowded? Too much noise, too little substance.
