Long, long ago a sales manager for a seed company spotted potential in Ray when he was relegated to unloading train cars because he had failed to apply himself at college. The sales manager fanned a spark into a flame and created a passionate apprentice of sales. Little did Ray know at the time that he would be part of the last generation of accidental sales people. As his career progressed from route sales, to feature/benefit to solutions selling, he also moved from individual contributor to manager and then leadership roles. Along the way Ray served apprenticeships with Masters of the game of sales, taking learnings from each.
While in the corporate world, Ray discovered that a few revolutionary universities were treating sales as a profession. He found that sales apprentices today no longer had to seek their place without guidance. Their craftsmenship would begin to earn the respect it deserved. Ray has found that teaching the lessons from his epic journey to the next generation of sales masters is indeed the path to achieving the level of the highest order.
Along the journey Ray developed a passion for turning the role of sales people from talking brochures to pathfinders. Storytelling is an essential tool for the next generation of sales professionals. Many have lost their way in the hail of bullets and animations of the PowerPoint forest. As sales people increasingly are tapped to lead their companies in executive roles their storytelling skills must be polished ever more.
