@mack
I didn't mean to come across as brusque. But, to me, it sounds like discrimination - and all companies (as I'm sure you know) cannot "legally" discriminate against based on what you've described.

When you say you didn't receive a chance to work - does that mean you were not "allowed" to work or the staffing agency didn't have work available for you until October? Also, temp agencies with direct-hire divisions shouldn't (as normal policy)say you have to sign up for temp work if you only want to be considered for full time work.

Also, perhaps, the agency that you are working with may not have access to the type of work you are qualifed/experienced to do. I would switch agencies, or find another one at the very least. Staffing agencies are held under the same laws as other "mainstream" corporations, so if you think they are discriminating against you, they probably are.

Great advice. And thanks for mentioning Brooklyn Home Companion!

I think we're only going to see more and more of a niche-driven media landscape in years to come, *especially* where print publishing is concerned. I see some of the major general-interest players existing, and then the niche pubs surviving, or going even more niche (for evidence, check out how well the advertising section is thriving in any regional or local weekly/monthly paper with a specific focus, be it local news or local arts or regional food, etc.). I was actually blogging about this on my namesake blog the other day (http://elizabethnolanbrown.com/2010/05/05/no-ad-sales-slump-in-dc/). I think the "Edible" franchise is a really good example of a workable model of magazine publishing ...

I love this post, this sentiment, and especially these sentences:
"It’s a shame that so many of us tie our worth to the paid hours of our day. Wouldn’t you much rather spend that time building up what is worthwhile – whether it is paid or not?"
80% of my tasks at salary job are purely administrative, and even though I have a door, my desk is still part of a cubicle set. It's really hard not to beat myself up about that, however ridiculous that sounds.
I was all pumped up yesterday because I have a lunch appointment with the CEO of a nonprofit to do some volunteer program evaluation work for them. On the phone, explaining the situation and my enthusiasm to my dad, I said, "If this works out, why, I'll... be closer to doing at least one thing every day that's fun, that I'm good at." Paid or not. The closer I get to 30, the clearer it is to me that it's all about the F-word: FUN.

@Rishona
I think some people forget how extremely flexible admin work can really be, especially if you are performing the duties you mentioned. A resume is just the tip of the iceberg to show off your skills. And, while different formats may help, it's best to translate your background and skills as transferable, whatever your desired job (or industry).

I was reading in the WSJ Career section how Gen Y workers are benefitting from the recession because more responsibility is being piled on them. this comes from companies cutting back on hiring workers (or combining jobs). The obvious upside is you get more experience (that you might not otherwise get)despite your job title. The downside? Maybe a little more stress...

@Karolyn
I've been volunteering as a communications and social media manager for a start up arts nonprofit. In that time, I've written and implmented communications strategies, started an online magazine and launched my own spin-off exhibit on the political empowerment of women in Afghanistan. It's stuff I enjoy doing - it's not all fun per se, but because I enjoy it and the work makes me feel like I have purpose, the outcome is totally worth it. I'm already 30 (oops, did I say that out loud) and I've learned that the fun can be gained in "retrospect."

My blog is about fundraising/philanthropy/nonprofits, but I'd like to expand it to allow me to write about all the other things that pop up in my head. There is not really a point in talking to the press unless you are promoting something. i mean, you have to ask yourself, why is this a good use of your time? Another element here is the truth of the art world, which is that its built on other people's money. Trust funds, windfalls, inheritance, old money. These are people who can afford to make and then market their own work to wealthy people, hence they can ask more for the work. There isn't any risk in the traditional sense. No one except the artist has to have even the slightest interest in buying their work. The artist has enough money backing him/her that they can have the best events, auctions, buy their own ad space, all before selling a piece.

Maybe I am wrong on this, but I lived in NYC for 5 years and that is what I observed from involvement with artists and the art community.

@Jessica
You're right. Jobs represent stability - it's hard to maintain a relationship when other parts of your life seem out of whack
@Penelope
Gainfully unemployed just means (to me) that although you aren't working in the traditional sense, you're employed in other parts of your life that are rewarding you substantially - I think my friend is doing this - but perhaps she does need to find more of herself.
@Penelope's sidenote: I was unemployed for 2 years for the bulk of my relationship with my fiance (and we were living together as well). I think part of the reason we're OK is because I knew what I wanted in career (and was looking) and I had my extensive volunteer work going on (which felt like a full time job anyway)

Interestingly enough I actually know several people in the "over 40" crowd who do this as well and rarely get looked at negatively because of it. They go in, implement new systems or processes that cut costs and increase profits, and they move on.

Realistically, companies should be filling roles to increase profits and then helping people move on once their major contribution period has ended. If you've done the most you'll ever do for an organization in the first 2-4 years, as I imagine is the case for most people, you're no longer gaining much and neither is the company so why stick around - or why do they keep you around?

Of course the culture at some businesses does allow for constant growth for both you and the company. This is the case with my employer, where we are constantly improving and evolving in order to stay ahead of the curve.
