Olga Garcia I just published my second blog post on my new blog "beingolga.com". It was incredibly nerve racking. The irony is that I have been blogging for my clients for the past 2 years. I am wondering if anyone else has felt that find of sensation when starting their own personal blog and how you dealt with that?

It usually takes much more time to become successful than you might expect. The blogging community, however, is very supportive and wants to help newbies. The best way to deal with these issues is to write about what you are passionate about and don't worry too much about who is reading it yet.

For now I am focused on developing my style of prose and focusing on the subjects of travel, young professional life and marketing. I know those are spread out, but I am addicted to talking about that stuff :)

@Lindsay: You are soooo right. I am writing a post that is going live on Saturday about my blogging experience so far. It is incredible the help and warmth I have received. What's crazy to me is that it took so long to jump in because I was scared, while all along, it is an amazing place that is not scary at all! :)

Rasha Proctor Dear Brazen Careerist, Do you have any recommendations on good resume writers specializing in digital media resume (mostly for people working online versus traditional positions)? I m looking to switch to digital marketing position and need a writer who will help me transition from my past history of sales and engineering in High Tech to digital media. Any personal recommendation is appreciated?

I agree, we're just beginning to see how great of a tool social media can be. However, at the moment I feel that many internet users are utilizing their social networks for personal reasons (to connect with friends). Hi Kim,
Since "Yoga" practice and teachers talk about love, compassion and union with oneself and the world, it is a bit tricky to do so while asking people to foot out $15-$20/class. I have some friends who own Yoga studios and there isn't much money anymore as they are competing either with other Yoga studios or with Gyms. When talking to them, I found out that they make most of their money from Training and selling products on the side.
Now regarding the donation, there are 2 sides to it. From the studio side, it allows more people to come in, then it is a numbers game (5 people paying $15/each Vs 10 people paying average of $10) and it also boosts the Studio's reputation as good doer.
From the students side, most people who seriously practice Yoga tend to be magnanimous. Therefore in addition to a great practice, it feels good to donate money and being generous versus being locked into a contract/card/monthly payment.
So I say it is a great structure.

Prior to that I held 3 positions that got me to that position. Any thoughts?

It's fine you've been with one company, but did you work on different projects? With different clients? Highlight your best accomplishments, rather than the length of tenure. The fact you ran multiple great projects is more impressive than doing the same old thing at multiple companies. You can show ambition through other ways than job-hopping.

Rebecca Thorman I work for a start-up where the dress code is very casual. I'm usually the most dressed up, just because I like to. I'm wondering, how does personal appearance change the way you think about someone? If someone is wearing a suit and a tie is that better than jeans? Does it affect your brand?

For instance, if you wear a pant suit and nice blouse and then realize your clients are more casual, you can always take off your suit jacket to become more casual. On the flip side, it's harder to dress "up" a polo shirt and jeans if you find out your clients are more traditional.

Rasha Proctor Hi guys, In talking to few friends in HR at various companies, they confirmed that, when references call to check the standard practice is to provide: confirmation of employment with dates, salaries and if it was voluntary or involuntary termination. On a related note, do you think it's a red flag if a potential employer makes a big deal of needing to check certain kinds of references (must be a direct supervisor) before the interview, and so on? I've tried to be accomodating because the employer doesn't know me, and my references should be great, and I understand not wanting to make a bad hire, but it's getting ridiculous. You should be able to tell from meeting me that I am not going to set the place on fire, and if you don't trust yourself to know that from an interview and a check of my work, then what will you really learn from grilling my former boss about my "style of communication?"

Karl Sakas: @Elizabeth: I'd push back on their demand. I bring my references list (in person) to the first interview and then offer the list to the ...More@Elizabeth: I'd push back on their demand. I bring my references list (in person) to the first interview and then offer the list to the interviewer at the end *if* things went well and I want to do a second round. I value my references' time and don't want their info floating around. If an interviewer hasn't even met with me yet, s/he doesn't know if I'm a fit for them, and I don't know if the company's a fit for me.

Checking references is time-consuming. I see reference-checks as something the hiring manager would do *after* they start winnowing their candidates to a short list, not an up-front thing.

My take is that if an interviewer insists on getting references before any initial interview, they're jumping the gun. You can handle this by saying, "I'm glad to share my references but I think we need to meet first to see if we're an initial match."

How do you think people should manage their careers given this information.

I was talking about the business gaining new clients over lunch with former co-workers yesterday, and one asked asked if I'd do a family portrait for her. At the time, one of the major values of Kolbe was how you fit or might fit in an existing organization. Kolbe keys off what the manager of group thinks is needed, not necessarily what may actually be needed. It will tell you about yourself, though knowing how that relates to a company or manager you are interviewing with requires a bit more understanding of what to ask and how to evaluate their answers. I think it would entail more than one session for you to absorb it.

As Angela says, define what you want out of the assessment process. That will help you be satisfied with your experience with the coach.

As for the $$, it all depends on where you live and how experienced your coach is and what assessments you are competing for feedback.

It never hurts to talk to several before making a decision. The relationship you have with the coach will impact how fast you move along in the process. Good luck!
