Raina Hello! I am an American currently completing a Masters in Finance degree in France. My coursework has included corporate and managerial finance, portfolio management, credit risk, LBO structuring, fixed income and mortgages, options, futures and swaps. Also, I'm fluent in French and Spanish. Does Citi place candidates in international posts?

Raina Hi All. I was interviewed at a small company recently that is looking to launch a database to keep pharma companies aware of what's happening with various pipeline products, ie, where the product is in its development. The woman who developed the database wants to market it to pharma companies, but she's stretched thin. Would social media marketing help her to get the word out about her product? Would so appreciate your insights and help.

You would never market a product in development that wasn't FDA-approved to consumers. The government would shut you down, your stock price would plummet, etc. No offense, but if it were legal, companies would already be doing it. The SEC, FDA, and FTC would all be on your a--. Think business-to- business marketing, not direct-to-consumer.

If you're a small pharma company with an innovative product, but not enough capital to launch DTC campaigns and the like, you'd want your company to be acquired by a bigger company. The database that tracks products in development could only ever be a b2b product. Hope that makes sense. If you want to learn more about the pharma world, pre-consumer, let me know. I'd be happy to chat.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, I really appreciate it!
@David, I've had real problems quantifying investor relations activities since every day is so different and raising money is something CEOs usually take credit for. Like for the client I helped while in the Senior Associate position to launch a campaign using its customers; it helped the client, which was a cable channel, to stay in a certain market which had 3 million viewers. Investor relations is a day-to-day function that allows companies to raise money and maintain fair stock valuation, but it's rarely a heroic, individual process. You work on a team with the CEO/CFO and it's hard to know what impact anything has because the market's always moving and buyers and sellers never tell you when they're dumping a position and you never know ahead of time why they will sell, or if it has anything to do with you or their agenda. Fund managers NEVER share that information because if they did, I could possibly tell their competitors about that information and impact that manager's strategy. IR is a position where you have to react a lot to what the market's doing, and getting companies in front of fund managers and investment banks IS being proactive. I'm not sure how I'd word that in a way that makes it seem like I'm hyping up what are the expected duties of someone in my position. IR people make sure companies comply with SEC regulations. Also, I can't reveal a lot because of confidentiality agreements I've signed. I've asked a lot of friends in IR for their resumes to see what I can do differently. It's a very tough job to quantify. Honestly, you never really know if what you're doing is working or not. CEOs consider IR to be a necessary evil. It's not a typical advertising, marketing, sales position. What I do is very niche and I've yet to find people who understand it enough to help me sell myself on the resume. So, I'm trying to figure it out myself.

However, instead of saying how many credits you've completed, just put expected degree date.

I find that you have impressive skills, but it's disorganized, and hard to find. Also, I think you need to really think about your job from a third person's POV. To me "Assisted in day-to-day management of two centers on campus (100+ weekly traffic)" means nothing... what is involved in this day-to-day management? I appreciate your attempt to quantify, but that's about 20 person a day, and without context of what's truly involved in a day-to-day management, 20 person a day doesn't seem that many... Does that mean you have to process a 10-page paperwork for each person, or do you just scan their card and wave them through in 2 seconds? See what I mean?

There's also the issue of credibility. You mentioned that you have published articles... what and where are they published? You don't want to seem like you're stretching. Are you published in a newsletter that you print on your own printer and tape to bathroom stall? That could be totally lame. Or that could be totally awesome if you started it and you really got some recognition for it, and built a community around it. But again, without context, it's hard to understand if that's an achievement, or just puffery. If you have legitimate published articles, list date / publication that they're published.

I'm not sure how your research section is setting you apart. Scour the website nowaday is a very common skill. Those databases are probably irrelevant in corporate setting. Also, I'm not sure database research is relevant to SM.

You're underselling your Twitter connections. Connecting with people on Twitter... that's cool, but unimpressive in this day and age. However, your 800+ follower and 55 lists shows a lot more promise. I would quantify that.

Right now they read like you took them from underneath each job and pasted them under summary. Maybe you could make them a little less specific and leave out the job reference, and put the bullet points you have now with their jobs. I would love to see the database info with the rest of your human trafficking assistant experience. Or perhaps rename the summary section as "achievements"? Also, you might want to think about removing 2nd place in the paper-writing contest, unless it's directly relevant. You have great experience!

Hi Raina,
I cannot argue with you wanting specialized and longer-view attention to your career goals and needs, and your frustration in not getting that.

Nor would I dispute the fact that you get 'some version of "that's not what I do"' from coaches.

I really appreciate your answer to me. You addressed my points and frustration. How does one go about finding a career coach who helps with long-term career management? Aside from rapport, how would one go about really quantifying the coach's results? Would the coach know how to work with someone like me? Are the certifications really informative as to a coach's ability? How do you find someone who only works with certain types of people in a certain type of space? How do you NOT WASTE MONEY just trying on different coaches for size? I would have rather spent $3,000 on investments in my IRA or on a trip to attend a friend's wedding, but I decided to invest in coaching. We all only have a limited amount of dollars and there are tons of temptations/necessities competing for that dollar. Why would I go with a coach who condescends to me and makes me do all the legwork for my position when that's exactly the opposite of what I'm looking for? Career coaching is not like personal training at all. Whoever used that analogy is wrong. I have a lot of training in rhetoric, logic, and argumentation, so if someone is going to use a faulty analogy with me just to pooh pooh my ideas, then that type of communication will be handled by my logical and analytical mind and that person should not take it personally at all. I like to clean up errors in logic and reasoning.

Marian Schembari What do you guys thinking about only choosing one career? Do you really think it's necessary to pick a field and stick with it?
