Many Director level and higher positions require a gradate degree to even be considered. Furthermore, Grad school gives people who aren't social butterflies a means to make great connections with other professionals.

On the other hand, with Web 2.0 becoming the standard instead of the "new thing", it is certainly possible to forge your own career path and forgo the grad degree.

It's generally agreed that unless you go to a top school (some defines that as top 4, some top 5, some top 10, some top 30. I don't think anyone defines it outside top 30), it's a waste of money. Waste of money in term not only tuition, but also opportunity cost in term of lost income. But, if you get financial assistance, that also helps the equation. (Some field requires an MBA to advance...)

Rachel Vincent As someone who is starting a business on a shoestring budget, I would argue that starting costs are an enormous cost For example, just filing a US trademark application could have paid a couple months of my rent. Living off of saving to start a company, those few months lack of rent is a big deal. I admire Mary's effort to help out small businesses, and I wish it was more common. Some kind of incentive for attorneys or accountants to offer small business startup packages would be great!

Why get one before your operation is viable? I have no doubt that at least half the trademarks issued over the past 5 years are abandoned. Trademarks are common law, they're validated by *using* them. If your business grows legs, then get a trademark if you must. I've been in business 15 years and still don't have one. TM is over used.

The last company I worked for decided to forgo trademarks at the beginning because they are so expensive. Years later, they spent millions in litigation to get that trademark when they went national (turned out there was another co with with name in another state). This is the risk each business owner has to decide on. If you're aiming to be a big national brand, it could be a larger risk. It can be a tough call.

Ryan Healy Love this post by Mark Cuban http://bit.ly/beKsEb. The simplest way to create more jobs is to allow entrepreneurs to spend less on lawyers and accountants. Ill take it a step further and say the government should provide incentives for entrepreneurs that go beyond this. What if anyone who creates a successful business receives a break on student loans or even full forgiveness? Of course you define what "success" is, but imagine the innovation that could take place with a small incentive!

I was advised by an accountant and an attorney to be aggressive with regard to deductions and interpretations. I'm told that if you have a good reason for them and IRS objects, you only owe the additional tax and interest on the additional tax. I'm seldom challenged on using this practice. Sometimes an accountant will be more conservative than necessary, especially when they are dealing with new regulations.

The question you posed is something that hits the "emotional home" of the user. I cannot even begin to list the amount of times I have thought that about my resume. David Spinks True... but I'd imagine that's a problem that a lot of brands would love to have. A community should be focused around connecting people and providing value to it's members. If you're able to accomplish that, more people will want to become part of the community...it's inevitable. And that's where subgroups help. Their voice might go unheard to the entire community, but within their corner of the community, they can still be heard.

Hey Linda, I tried to send you a regular private message but since you're not "my fan," I can't do it. So a comment will have to do!

Within the last year, I've started using my scientific editing skills for friends who write fiction. One friend in particular also wants me to do publicity and marketing for her and I am trying but I find myself not having a cohesive plan of action and I have very few media contacts with which to align myself.

She self-published which also makes getting trade reviews difficult. Kirkus is the only one so far who would do it and they charge. So to get on B&N's shelves, we need at least one trade review.

I looked at your site and you have so much great experience. I wanted to see if you taught anything online but it doesn't look that way. If you would be interested in a mentorship of some kind (if you have any time to do something like that) or if you could recommend resources of information besides that one PR blog I saw on your site, I would greatly appreciate it. Just let me know.

I think you can send me a private message because I'm "your fan." So thanks in advance for any info you can give me!
