The Ultimate Showdown: Grad School vs Professional Experience.
Please bring your minds, but leave any weapons or blunt objects at home.

Many Director level and higher positions require a gradate degree to even be considered. Furthermore, Grad school gives people who aren't social butterflies a means to make great connections with other professionals.
On the other hand, with Web 2.0 becoming the standard instead of the "new thing", it is certainly possible to forge your own career path and forgo the grad degree. 121 weeks ago

It's generally agreed that unless you go to a top school (some defines that as top 4, some top 5, some top 10, some top 30. I don't think anyone defines it outside top 30), it's a waste of money. Waste of money in term not only tuition, but also opportunity cost in term of lost income. But, if you get financial assistance, that also helps the equation. Really getting frustrated with twitter lately. I've been a member for several years now and out of nowhere about 95% my tweets are being excluded from the search. This results in any #brazen tweets to be completely missing and don't get to participate in #u30pro chats and the like. Twitter says it's a known problem but it doesn't seem to affect anyone else!
Just venting... created an alternate username to see if I can filter through that tonight. See if that works!

However, I have been doing a bunch of research into real-time search results with Google and Bing. It appears that both engine put some amount of negative weight on hashtags (which makes sense since it is often repetitive info as well as info only interesting to small groups). There also appears to positive weight to length of time on twitter account and a low following:follower ratio. So autofollow could hurt you. 123 weeks ago

If I like something, then I will RT it, if it's relevant I will add a # tag, I'll follow someone only if their tweets interest. Their algorithms shouldn't be finding anything programmatical in how I operate. Suppose it's just a bug and will have to wait it out. Thanks for the info! 123 weeks ago

On a completely unrelated note: how do we disable the new banner running under Brazen network pages?
R. Stavros Bezas:
Continuing on the unrelated note... what happened to the Blogs link at the top? Has it been moved, or *gasp* removed? 123 weeks ago

To be honest with you, it never worked quite right. But never fear, I'm a big fan of blog browsing too.
I put together a wire frame a couple months ago for a new for members to browse blogs. Now that the Blog link is officially gone, I don't feel bad pushing my new ideas on our development team :)

Glad to see some newcomers joining the network. It's difficult to get a discussion going with no people! Right now I'm diving deep into Career Planning. What does it mean for you? How do you view your long-term strategy? What are you doing to identify what you SHOULD be looking for in your strategy?

I have identified that I am not a specialist and a path of a generalist makes more sense. For this, my career will be a series of positions where I gaining attributes, tenure and results to my arsenal. I've identified that my most important skill is that of consulting, so I am focused heavily on this. To support this cross-functional skill I'm pursuing several opportunities over the next 5-7 years. My long term strategy is to understand the best ways to niche & market the talents that fall into both areas. To identify what I should look for, I tend to journal daily about my accomplishments so that I can track how much I'm using these talents and where do they fit naturally. 107 weeks ago

Would you care to share how you are deliberately progressing your professional development? After some deep introspection I have created a crib list of areas that I feel I am deficient on and require work. I also created a separate list of what I am particularly strong on and focus energy in those areas as well! Then I begin putting myself in situations where I need to 'stretch' to overcome the deficiencies. I can explain more, but the allowed count is quickly dropping.. 127 weeks ago

Hello Personal Branders! :) Was wondering how you guys gauge how effective your brand is. In other words, how can you tell how closely people's perception of you line up with the brand you are building? This question reminds me of Michael Scott from The Office. lol, great example of someone who has a big disconnect between his perception of what people think of him...and what people ACTUALLY think of him. How do we avoid becoming Michael Scotts? lol

Has anyone ever heard of "Guanxi"? Apparently, it's an age-old Chinese strategy of doing business with those you know and trust. That's what I've heard! Anyone care to add anything to that?

I believe it was MCD that had a difficult time entering China as they did not develop it prior to launching. Having Gaunxi was so important to the people that as a culture they had no interest in a business without it. This speaks volumes to the amount of effort and foresight that needs to go into relationship and trust building as early in the process as possible. Define yourself with these principles and Gaunxi will follow. :) Great topic to bring up! 127 weeks ago

Greetings all! I recently started a video blog covering all the aspects that I have encountered in my own professional and personal development. I look forward to discussing more in detail here! At the risk of being self-serving, since my most recent entry covers the topic, but what are your thoughts on how to deliberately build out your social network in your corporate environment? I discuss my thoughts in the video linked below, what do you guys think?

I don't like: mean, arrogant, complacent and want to pull you down with them type people.

I especially like #4 about knocking on the doors even if there isn't a listing! One technique that is also vitally important is to distinguish yourself from the herd. Especially today, separating yourself is more important than ever. One trick I have done was instead of just emailing my CV and letter I also next day air it to the person in charge (if I can get their name). They have to sign for this (or their admin) and it sends a clear message. I want to be seen and should be! 128 weeks ago
