Becky Benishek The Talent Shortage Survey from ManpowerGroup is out! Find out what positions employers are struggling to fill (engineering is #4 in the U.S.)--and why there's such a disconnect: 3/4s of employers surveyed globally claim lack of experience or skills as the primary reason for difficulty filling positions--yet only 1 in 5 employers are interested in training to fill the gap. Diane L What about an "unjoin" button for groups? I noticed that people are in groups called "Young Working Professionals" or "undergraduate students". Since we go through career development quickly, especially for newly grads, we should be able to move in and out of groups. This way BrazenCareerist can follow us through our career journey. So how about that "unjoin" button?

I don't have to do all that much. I get every single email anyone says about anything in a discussion I've participated or posted.

This discussion we're in right now... if it were to go on for the next two weeks, with emails every hour... my inbox would fill up with every single comment... even if I was done with the discussion weeks ago. There's no way to turn it off, except to create a separate box in my email for BC emails... or assign them to spam.

TOP IDEA: Sam Rye The future is looking like a rapid move away from value judgments based on material ownership, and toward valuing content and experience. As we educate ourselves and resource dependence push us toward a low carbon economy, I think we should be looking at opportunities this will bring rather than being scared of the consequences.

Well I'm a little lost as to your argument. Or whether you just look to the negatives of everything.

I gave you examples of how the rise of collaborative consumption is showing its face - and you tell me that they do not help when it comes to permanent housing. They were never designed for the use you apply to them.

So tell me, what is the future for your community, environment & for the wider global community if the current levels of reszource consumption and hyper-consumerism are sustained in your area?

TOP IDEA: Steve Cleary Last night's networking roulette got me thinking about a project I had put on the back-burner, iPhone roulette. This is a fun and engaging app that incentivizes people to re-connect with their friends and families. The app runs through the user's contact list and randomly selects one of their contacts. The user is then faced with the decision to call (10 pts), text (5 pts), email (3 pts), or skip (-5 pts). Or something to that nature. Then points are shared online. Whaddya think?

If you scroll through your iPhone contacts, I'm sure you'll find more than a few "Oh, Yeah! Him!"s. This app is just a fun way of encouraging people to keep in touch.

Good point though to allow the user the option to set which contacts should or shouldn't be included in the spin. I know I wouldn't want to lose points for skipping AT&T customer service or the Pizza place at 9am :^)

Flexibility – We offer “flexibility” in various forms: work location independence, non-traditional schedules (days) and shifts (times), job sharing, etc.
Progressive Career Movement – We value in-house talent and maintain a Career Mobility website for jobs available to internal employees before externals. We also offer a large slate of professional development courses delivered in-person, online, and by teleconference, and we have a tuition reimbursement program to help offset costs for those wishing to pursue degrees in higher education.
Corporate Volunteerism – We give back to our communities via local and national outreach programs. We encourage all employees to use their paid “Volunteer Day” each year to support the organization of their choice.
Meaningful Discussion – You may not be considering a job in the financial services industry right now, but you may in the future. We have a variety of jobs and are happy to speak to anyone interested in learning more about our jobs; we work together to connect candidates with the right recruiters. Find us on social media, then connect with us in multiple ways (online, phone, email).
Benefits – Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, Disability, and 401K start Day One.

Elysa Rice Out of curiosity how many of you have multiple "jobs" that pay you in addition to a regular paycheck - freelancing, contract work, etc. Also, do you publicize these side jobs? How about to your employers?

In terms of priorities, my full-time salaried job always comes first, and I fit in my side jobs when I have time during nights and weekends.

I never hide the work that I do from my current employer, but I make sure that they know that work is my #1 priority. Often, working on the side actually makes my professional job better - by becoming published, for example, I actually landed a few book-layout and writing projects with my current employer. I've also used the experiences for great networking opportunities to put people in touch with each other.

Or at least that's what their audience are paying attention to most of the time.

Plus, I truly believe moms are people too (really?) -- i.e. grown-ups/adults with their own feelings and opinions about everything and the world should listen. But we shouldn't just be moms, we must be our own 'self'. Being a mom should only make us more multi-faceted, complex, intriguing and more than able to contribute to any discussion, intellectual or otherwise.

And have I already said thanks to Brazen Careerist for helping me do this? =)

My commute is only about 7 miles, so sometimes I take a longer route home to get a little more exercise in the afternoon. I keep shoes and belts in a drawer at my office, so I don't need to carry those heavy items every time I ride in (I also keep extra socks and underwear in case I forget). In the morning, I ride with just my clothes for the day and my lunch in a trunk pack on my rear rack…not a very heavy load. I am lucky to have facilities to shower and change at work, but I have worked other places where I had to just clean up in the sink. That’s doable once you get used to it.

I have been bike commuting for a long time, and I have found that the key is organization. Once it becomes a routine, it is pretty easy, but getting into the swing of it takes a little planning.

William Bryan I was talking to my dad about my career goals and the time frame to get those goals. Now my dad thinks that everyone has to do there time in a company before they see the benefits. Meaning working at an entry-level for several years before you can go for a mgmt, director, or even executive position. Do you guys believe that you have to "do your time" in a company to advance? If you do, what do you think is the timeframe for "doing your time?"
