TOP IDEA: Hannah Kane The craze in career advice is that the job market is all about job CREATION-- job postings are a thing of the past. Then why have my networking and info interview efforts led to dead ends, while responding to job postings have led to dozens of interviews and a job offer? Am I doing something wrong-- or is it that job creation has worked for a minority of people, but isn't the way of the future?

My thoughts...get job first and create later. I look at job creation as creating from where you are. It sounds like there is an opportunity to gain some experience while discovering more about yourself. With a little bit of experience and self discovery, you can work on "creating" the type of work you do within your current job.

Bruny

Emily Jasper One thing I've seen young employees do is blow the opportunity they have when in an entry-level role. They feel the work is beneath them, but instead of doing a stellar job, they can't even complete day-to-day tasks. I've found success that going above and beyond gave me opportunities to train teams in Geneva within my first year. What tips do you have to demonstrate going "above and beyond"?

Hannah Kane Over the course of my job search I've discovered the sheer quantity of advice that's available for job seekers, from networking tips to interview advice to the word that makes or breaks your resume. I've perused blogs, read articles, attended webinars. Sometimes the advice makes sense... other times, it seems silly, or it blatantly contradicts something else you've heard. In the end, we all need to pick the tips we think are right. How do you decide what advice to follow?

The job search really isn't scientific...wherein you can follow specific instructions and success comes out. It has to be tailored to the job hunter, and in order to do that, one must be as self aware as possible.

So I spend time getting to know me, and understand what I can and cannot do..and hunt accordingly.

Peter Epstein Since I taught english and lived in Thailand I have seen my patience grow exponentially. Although patience is a great trait most of the time, are there ever times when patience can be a hindrance to success?

TOP IDEA: Peter Epstein I've heard this quote tons of times, but it still manages to re-inspire me every time I read it. - "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did so. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." - Mark Twain.
