Loss Prevention is often seen as a reacting to a standard formula of theft. The formula is generally accepted as being: theft happens, it is investigated, a person is held accountable, cycle repeats. Unfortunately, this gross over simplification is not able to adequately address the issues of both internal and external theft.
The real formula must include the personal formula that the thief uses before the decision to steal is made. By understanding this real formula, one is able to break the cycle before theft before it occurs.
Appropriate analysis of existing operational data can allow for the interruption of the potential thief's personal assessment of the activity. Breaking this cycle, through proactive threat management, is key to sustaining operational efficiency and, more importantly, high levels of profitability.
