Andrew Shell If you've started (or are starting) a company, where did the idea for your company come from? Did you already know your target demographic before you started or did you find it as you went along?

You don't want to be self-employed and you be the system and always be tied down by that business if you aren't there. You should look at network marketing it is the business for the 21st century. Read, Napolean Hills, Think and Grow Rich. David Schwartz's book, The Magic of Thinking Big. Also, Robery Kiyosacki's book The Business for the 21st Century.

The idea came from being in the industry already and I spotted a gap in the market for what I went on to do. Regarding target demographic this grew as the business expanded and we managed that growth. As the business flourished in growth we always developed into new services. Personally you start of with an idea and you cannot help but develop into new markets/services. Whatever works and makes the customer happy! Plus making profit helps

Cameron Plommer I've found that many people don't know what kind of career they want to pursue is largely because they just don't know what's out there. Many college students are only familiar with their parents' profession, making it more likely for students to conform to their parents' path, which is probably not their area of true interest. What's your take on this? Here's mine: http://howtobeextraordinary.com/2010/08/conforming-to-our-parents-career...

I think folks conform out of fear. People fear what they do not know and if people are not exposed, as you remark, they do walk down a path similar to their parents or a path filled with limitation. It is a means of being comforted and secure that some do such things.

I don't think teachers are at fault. There are guidance counselors who are supposed to help GUIDE for the four years. I do think parents play a role, they ought not impress upon their children, "I was a farmer, you're going to be a farmer too." Humans ought to have choice and live with that freedom.

The issue, which you mention often (and so I do hope you'll contact my aunt one day Cameron), is that parents are not trained to expose their children to a world of possibilities, especially if all they received was the high school experience Patricia speaks of.
*I wish many kids knew of the book, What Color is My Parachute. It really affected my perspective when it came to searching for a career, it opened my eyes. The author revises the book every year, he's dedicated to helping people tap into their interest as you say.

Cameron Plommer http://ow.ly/21SB3 In my Untemplater article I wrote how Americans are dependent on others for employment. For me as an unemployed grad, I've proactively tried to better myself. I've started a blog, networked and met new people (on and offline), and started a few cool projects. The point is, sure I'm looking for the right job in the field I want to pursue (marketing, project management), but I'm also using my time to grow professionally and personally. What are you doing while unemployed?

So many people get hung up on not finding a job and they should look at how they can better their life themselves and look at opportunities that are out their to teach them how to be in charge of their own future. People made money during the depression, but schools don't teach that.

Cameron you need to go to my website at the-team.biz/1693745 and look at this opportunity. They are looking for some ambitious people to help market their products and have just hit over 2.5 billion in just 5 years. They have great leaders to help us succeed. Amanda Christianson I'm interested in a position that's been listed for a person with 2-3 yrs experience. I have 5. The position is billed as entry level, and I feel I am not. It's a slight change from my current career, but not so big where I feel I would need to start on the bottom rung. It's important for me to be challenged at work, and perhaps this wouldn't offer too much for too long. Should I go for it as a means to start veering off in a new direction, or would I set myself up for disappointment?

I get excited about a new job and the possibilities for advancement are usually slim, unless someone retires or quits. I always need to be challenged and a desk job has never kept me challenged for long. I just got involved in a network marketing business and every day it gives me a challenge and excitement. I am working it part-time, while I still have a full-time job that I am bored with, but know that in 1-3 years I will be able to walk away from it and be my own boss and make my own financial decisions. I am tired of exchanging time for money and never having enough money to enjoy my family and do the things we want. Take a chance and be your own boss. Don't let other people dictate your success, you sound very ambitious and have leadership skills. Don't sell yourself short.

Bryon Ownby I've been passed up on two promo's due to freezes on company relocations. My last performance review only stated I need more visibility to site senior mgmt (although I have great visibility at our hdq location, but it is remote and only seen by a few). I have led the intern program here for 2 years, teach two learning/development classes, on team to coordinated the annual site holiday party (in addition to my normal job). Any ideas what else I could do (very bored with my position right now)?

Many managers have difficulty giving what they consider negative feedback and fail to help their subordinates grow. Asking for ways you could improve helps them go there, and obviously your reaction to the feedback will also encourage them to share their impressions. Worth a try, I think!

I'm not given any improvement areas to be honest - it's either due to company freeze policy for the last promo skipped. For my annual job eval, I was told more visibility, but I have also discovered this was told to several people in the annual review - a way to avoid a riot I guess. I've spoken with other mgrs, and we cannot come up with other additional things to do - and my mgr cannot think of anything either (but maybe take one mgmt class). Odd is all I can say!

Matthew Wagner I need some help in redefining myself. I have been in the financial sales business for the past 6 years but was laid off in November. After much soul searching I've decided I want to change career paths and do something more in the business administration/marketing arena. Zohaib R I am doing this and I think I am ready: I am quitting my job (it's a great position and pays very well but everyday in the morning, I have to force myself not to call in sick). Any body else went through this experience and like to share their perspective :)

Marian Schembari Okay, I love this group but the concept of "career changers" tweaks me out a bit. There are so many things I LOVE to do that I don't want to tie myself down to only one. I agree with you 100%. I have searched all my (I am turning 52 next week) to try and figure out what my purpose it and I know it is not sitting behind a desk and pushing papers. When we turn 18 people tell us to grow up and pick a career and that is what defines us. I don't agree. Why can't we do several things in our lifetime. I just joined a leadership group called TEAM and I just started my own network marketing health and wellness company with them leading me through some challenges I know I will face. I want to travel, help charities of my choice, spend time with my grandson and not be tied to an office and have someone else dictate my pay. It is great, so you can reaching for your dreams and don't let anyone squash them.
