Leena Chugh At what point do you end an email exchange? How many Thank you's? The client asked for something (1st email). I delivered it (2nd email). He said thank you for delivering (3rd email). Do you write a 4th email saying 'Thanks for acknowledging' or 'My pleasure' or skip it? I feel that the 4th one is nice courtesy but just extends it a little too much.

My advice to you Leena is if it feels right send it but if your questioning yourself then dont!

Sharalyn Hartwell Hey guys, so I wonder if I am stuck in a rut. When I'm tackling a new target/prospect list, I tend to call first and leave a message if I don't get an answer, then send an email. I'll follow up again in a few days if I don't hear back. I've done that for years. What else are you doing to get call backs?

It's all free. Todd is the king of offline prospecting and I have learned a lot from him. He and Mike Dillard (Magnetic Sponsoring, Blackbelt Recruiting) really got our marketing business off the ground. Now we are having a lot of fun! If it isn't fun, you shouldn't be doing it :>)

Ty Unglebower I now confess that I'm intimidated by resumes. There is so much CONFLICTING advice about writing them!! I have valuable experiences and sought after skills, but writing a resume must not be one of them. I once sent out 65 resumes in a month, and got zero interviews. I've written literally hundreds of tailored versions of my resume based on various different schools of thought. Nothing. At least I have my freelancing, which is pitch by pitch. But man alive I'm burned out on resumes.

Speaking for my area, the idea of finding out exactly where a job ad came from, let alone who within the company created it is not exactly practical. Anbd it must not be a very popular option on the other side either, because many of the newspaper ads and such say, "please do not attempt to contact anyone from our company to check your progess! If we want you, we will let you know."

Not that I do a whole lot of that "go get in front of them and meet the right people" type of job search anyway, preferring to build a network by which I can be introduced through other contacts. But it would appear that many jobs for which I apply don't exactly like that sort of assertiveness.

Or if you really want the job and would like to leave another good impression, try sending your note by express or priority mail (depending on your finances). In my years as a hiring manager, this approach would have been a welcome relief from the hundreds of e-mails I received every day. And the candidate who bothered to go this extra distance would have stayed in my mind.

John Mattucci Right now I am having to deal with a boss with obvious mental issues. It's with a small company, and he is the sole proprietor. On top of his OCD and Bi-Polar issues I've had to deal with, he has a domination/power complex over employees (I find most sole proprietors business owners have). How do I navigate his metal problems so that I don't get fired for walking in on the wrong foot? Is playing his game the best way to go? He probably does not control over his mental issues. Same boat anyone?

While I've never worked under your exact circumstances, ...MoreJohn, I want to acknowledge your tough position. It is an energy drain, to say the least. While I've never worked under your exact circumstances, I have some general thoughts based on previous experience.

1) Make a simple pro-con list about your role AND the company. Are you there because you LOVE your job AND the company? Is the job just okay, but the product the company creates saves lives? The first step is to clearly understand why you are working there. If it is solely for a paycheck (you will not get unemployment if you quit), start looking for a new job now!

2) Don't commiserate with your co-workers on the situation. While they may be the only ones who truly understand your situation, it exacerbates the work conditions. The old saying is true, misery loves company.

3) The only thing you can control is your reaction. Sometimes we become mirrors to others. For example, if someone approaches you with a smile and compliment, you will respond in the same manner. While an approach of accusation may cause a response of rebuttal or defense - usually in a louder tone. Sometimes those who are in a position of power, like to show it by belittling those around them. Control your response and don't engage at same level. The technique Elizabeth suggested is perfect -- remember to keep your tone and body-language in check. It's not just what you say, but how you say it!

Good luck! Keep us posted.

I referred my cousin (just graduated from GW w/ an english degree) and she was hired a week later with minimal experience. If you can't get a job right away, take an unpaid PT internship to get your foot in the door and if you need money - work retail or somewhere else where you can better your speaking and presentation skills so you sound better when speaking with higher level managers / executives. Good luck!

TOP IDEA: Zack Zaban Quick question: what do you, as a student, want out of a social media network? I was thinking of this earlier this morning when I jumped on to Facebook. I HATE all of the "dootsy" Facebook applications that people put on their profiles, essentially cluttering them instead of providing valuable information. For me, a social media network should integrate functionality across the site instead of having profiles/pages feel like a bunch of unconnected widgets.

In my opinion, social networks should keep in touch people and help them to create a network of relationships that could be useful in a personal and professional way. You know that you can block other people's farmville and mafia updates from being shown in your feed, so you can get back to reading statuses and notes.

Cameron Plommer I have a problem letting go of my thoughts after the work day is over and I should be devoting time to my personal life, mainly my girlfriend. I have such an urge to write and put my thoughts down on paper. Its just hard for me to let it go until the next day. Part of the reason I do this is because I spent a lot of my life not doing anything, not making or producing, only consuming. Consuming information, entertainment, whatever. What do you do to stop for the day and focus on other things

However, I have found that loading my ipod w/ a large amount of music that I love and going for at least a 30min-1 hour walk or run at the end of the day completely refreshes me. I am a full time working Mom who never really 'shuts off' and taking even 30 min to walk and listen to music completely clears my head. I have been amazed at how clear my head gets during this time and all the ideas that come to me. I know it may seem so simple compared to previous comments but I suffer from constant 'overload' on a daily basis and this is something that has kept me grounded.

Ed, that's great! It's so key. Also if you have ever read "The Four Agreements" by Don Jose Luis Ruiz his last agreement is the best:

4. Always Do Your Best
Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self- judgment, self-abuse and regret.

I think people need to remember this when the day ends.

Melissa,
Seems like you could use your current job at the magazine as a launching pad for your business. Spend the next 9 months building your network in the small biz world - owners and service providers (attorneys, accountants, smbiz associations). Create an exellent website for your business / marketing writing services - showcase your talents there.
