Dan Schawbel I've spoken to a lot of people outside the Brazen network about personal branding, leading up to the launch of the 2nd edition of Me 2.0: 4 Steps to Building Your Future (which comes out today). I wanted to survey the Brazen community to see what your biggest fears are concerning personal branding? Are you afraid that you will lose your own identity or that you will get criticized? Please comment here and we can have a conversation about it!

Does providing a consistently genuine personal experience whether in professional or personal situations organically create a reputation that speaks to your qualities which I believe sells you a much larger audience. Finding the balance between tell me and show me.

Adam Gilbert Simply Hired just released some pretty interesting research that says 83% of job seekers would take a job they love for less money than they're making now. I think this is great! One of the things I always remind my blog readers is that relativity can make us unhappy and if we focused more of our energy on doing what we love doing and less on salary expectations then we would be happier people. Do you think that's true?

Yes, like with any health and fitness regimen - the key is to start and keep on going. That's it. The hardest part is keeping on going. Most people quit before the magic happens. But if you believe in what you're doing, it makes it so much easier. Unfortunately, I can't find the link - I read it and just jotted it down.

If you love what you do you will spend less money trying to entertain yourself and be fulfilled. Just my take on it. I haven't been out in weeks, but very rarely think about it. Perhaps I am in my own little bubble but who wouldn't be stoked knowing that every day when you finish the day that you have created something that never existed prior to 7am that morning.

Lyn Nelson Do you separate your personal and professional online presence (e.g., two twitters, two facebooks, etc.) or do you use one account? Do employers want to see personal comments? It seems like a lot of employers want a well-rounded vision of employees or potential employees, but is there a risk of presenting yourself in an unprofessional light? Very curious to see what Brazen people think!

I'd say the general consensus is be real, even your personal side, but don't go overboard. With that said, I've seen some people who regularly post profanity on twitter on weekends and professional links on weekdays - to each their own I suppose.

I'm a few years older than you and a high school classmate got me on Facebook to reconnect with old high school friends. I've reconnected with most of those I chummed with in high school some 38 years ago, and we picked up where we left off; even after 25 years of not talking to or seeing most of them. But I also have a myriad of friends on FB of all ages. I've an 88 year old friend who shares a lot with my age group. I also see her weekly at church and we actually talk to each other. I have lunch sometimes with a group of 75-95 yr olds on Sundays and we have great fun. My mom was older; hanging with these folks is like hanging with my mom and her friends. I also have some friends who are Gen Yers in their early 20s. They are busy, but we share emails and ideas. We don't talk on the phone much because we're both very busy, but we used to ... when we had more time. Most of us live apart so we can't gather socially live, but we would if we could.

I am on Twitter, but sparsely. I haven't figured it all out yet. But again, those with whom I have connected are varied in age from old to Gen Y age and we exchange ideas.

LinkedIn is another one that is interesting. I've connected with a few people, but it's hard to connect with them if I don't know them or haven't worked with them. At least that's my experience. I've tried to connect with people but LinkedIn blocks it. Maybe I just haven't spent time figuring it out.

What surprises me, though, is what people post on Facebook. I've blocked a few people I know because their language and pictures were crude. I'm no prude, but I don't want that crap on my FB page. I tire of the constant political badgering people post and then complain if you post something that opposes them. Why create a negative environment where people can't agree to disagree online when you hear enough of it on TV?

So to me the communications gap hasn't changed much whether using Social Media or not. Through the interconnections people get by liking a page or connecting with someone, then interacting through the threaded conversations, youth and older folks can all gather in conversation on FB. Youth may pursue it more. If someone is close, they may send an email and start a private conversation (which has happened to me a few times) or they will call (if the number is online) or we'll connect in some live social setting. It depends on the kids and whether you connect with their interests. I think the latter is what matters most... how do we older folks connect with the interests of the youth? We can be as wise as an Ancient, but if we cannot connect somehow youth will overlook us. Find a common ground with Gen Y group and you find the connection, otherwise we're just old fogeys spouting hot air over some inconsequential idea or attitude.

The music, timing, the truth etc., the entire presentation is awesome.

Thank you for letting me re-visit this. Make it great and worthwhile whatever it is.

Rebecca Thorman I took some last-minute time off last week, but I still came in for a meeting last Thursday. Coming in for the meeting made me realize how lucky I was to have such a great job that was flexible and understanding. I was so happy to be working with such great people. Is your workplace and boss/ co-workers understanding? Do they let you have freedom if you get the job done? How can we better encourage workplaces like this?

However, we've developed a foundation of trust and teamwork and we know we can count on each other. That also means that if I'm taking time off I should make myself as accessible as possible, whether that's responding to urgent emails and phone calls or trying to squeeze a few hours of work in. We're a very small team so it doesn't go unnoticed when someone is absent.

I'm not fluent in many of these, but maybe the lists are valuable for others looking for more tricks and tools. (1) Jason Baer's "39 social media tools I'll use today" at http://socialmediatoday.com/SMC/175340 ; (2) an article from a few years back I still have bookmarked is "50 Sites Every Business Needs A Presence On" at http://www.insidecrm.com/features/50-social-sites-012808/
And there are great social sites for niches. I'm a huge fan of Etsy (artisans of things hand made and vintage vendors). I also like Ravelry (for knitters and crocheters), Curriki (for teachers sharing ideas and curriculum), BookMooch (giving and getting books free), 43Things (life lists and social encouragement, Fashion Network (great for those that follow fashion, also good for small indie designers to connect with others who are passionate about fashion and design), Ning (has plentiful niches and special interests you can network with; I follow two robust Raw Food networks), Deviant Art is a robust artist community (from photography, to sketching, to manga, to skin art, to you name it), Caring Bridge (where people and families with a tragically ill loved one can post their stories and updates, and others can give them support and resources), and Ancestry.com for connecting with others who are doing geneology and researching family trees.
