TOP IDEA: Laura Bond I recently wrote a blog post about "side hustling," a fun, trendy saying for getting paid for doing something in addition to your full-time income. While many other bloggers will extol the freedom and money that often come with side hustling, some forget to tell you how hard it is to get started (financially or otherwise) and keep going. Work/life balance, what? Harder when you have two+ jobs! Interested in side hustling? Check this out first: http://t.co/MLUJiJr

TOP IDEA: Ryan Paugh Do you remember why you became a Location Independent professional in the first place? I wrote a guest post for Elysa Rice (http://bit.ly/gJcCRy) about how to rock being a Location Independent professional. One of the things that I mentioned was how important it is to remember why you chose to be Location Independent in the first place. Was it so you can travel more? Pack your bags and go. Did you want to improve your overall health? Tie your shoes every morning and go for a run. Live it up!

Ryan Paugh How much do you know about personal branding, social media and current hiring practices? Dan Schawbel helped CNN put together this quiz (http://bit.ly/hMvxKj ) to help readers find out. I'm embarrassed to say that I only got 55% on this quiz, but I was never a good test taker so I'm going to give myself a break. I'm interested in how you guys do. Take the test and leave a reply letting us know your score. Also, did any answers in the quiz surprise you?

But, I agree with most of you in that - while its nice if you know that 40% of hiring managers will not consider hiring a person based on something found online - its more important to know how to monitor and maintain your online presence (aka. what will come up if someone Googles you). Experience vs. just knowing the stats . . . I'd go with the former.

I still look through the job listings online and send out resumes. I’m taking it seriously and looking at it as a second job. But, because I’m looking for work outside the industry that I’m currently apart of I’ve decided to supplement my traditional search by making a go at widening my social circle which will hopefully lead to widening my professional one. I’m attending several Meetup groups, Toastmasters, language groups, and thinking about joining associations such as the Smithsonian Young Benefactors. In DC it really is all about who you know so my strategy is to get to know as many people as possible. Does anyone have any thoughts on how I’m approaching my job search? What percentage of networking to traditional methods do you recommend? Thanks.

I haven't spent as much time on it as I should, but what I see if very beneficial and can lead to exciting opportunities. And yes, writing does lend itself to finding more opportunities.

AJaime: I suggest using both networking and traditional methods without focusing on percentages. If you find an opportunity seek it out regardless of the source as it may be that PERFECT job waiting for you to find it. Each resource holds an advantage; I'm not one to put percentages on which is better... they all work together toward the common goal. I use them all with each opportunity I find.

I worked in K-12 education for a very long time. I don't mean to sound cynical, but if it's not tested, it's usually not a priority so I am not shocked at the response you've received. Also, it can be seen a a conflicting message. Educators are supposed to be telling their students that education is the great economic equalizer, but when you look hard at the numbers through a financial management lens, it doesn't always show that.

This site is too much like a self-help book on infinite feedback. I want customers for my flooring business in the Denver Metropolitan area! There, see how easy it is to state your business, and go on? So far, I haven't seen one single person in here who doesn't sound like a patient at a phychiatric clinic. For $60,000 a year I'll cut through the nonsense at your company like Genghis Khan raiding villages in China, if you want to hire me. Like what you hear? It's called "clarity", "sense of purpose", and "maturity", all of which seem to be lacking here. Just say what you mean, and mean what you say, that's all I ask.
