Very interesting posts. I think it is fair to say that strategy (good, bad or indifferent) contains many of the attributes listed above.

I would completely agree that the "desired reality" has to be clear. Lack of clarity seems to be a large stumbling block for many organizations.

I also think that "action" in strategy has to be emphasized. If I were to ask a follow-up question. It would be "how is strategy developed?"

elizabeth I started a social networking site that is a very good one that I want to get big, so I have a few questions. Is there a typical pattern that the big websites used when they first started. This may seem like a dumb question, but what exactly do people mean when they "running it"? I am jst wondering if there is more to it than responding to blogs. It is probley just me, but it seems like adverising involving on a service on the internet is way more broad that non internet advertising

If you rely on ads, then perhaps running it would revolve around increasing your visibility, SEO, and promoting the site onto other networks.
i would say the big companies relied on heavy word of mouth and referal kinda thing to promote their site. Promote promote promote...

Stanley Lee From my understanding, recruitment of new employees/teammates are based on the mix of competency and likability. This article from HBS (http://bit.ly/fqIDt) was brought up on BC a while ago. People tend to want to be with a more likable co-worker (albeit less competent) than with a star performer who acts like a jerk. Do you see anything fishy about this typical choice from common sense? It would be great to hear from you as I would like to use some opinions for my blog entry about it. Thanks.

You need someone competent enough to perform the job adequately, but the ability to work with others (if the job requires working with other people) is also important. I have gathered strategies from you to avoid this scenario. The second type of person to avoid would be the lovable fool. Personally I don't want either of these types of people to slip through the cracks in the recruitment process, as they are both on a different extent destructive to a team, hence I'm asking this question. What are the suggested steps to avoid recruiting a lovable fool onto a team? By also taking a look at the achievement history on the resume despite showing a scene of being likeable in an interview? Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Stanley Lee In your opinion, do you think recruiting a new member for a small team resembling those making up the "start-up" companies is equivalent in concept of a typical firm's HR and technical teams recruiting a new employee? Also great to hear your explanations. Thanks.

Great article stanley.

I changed Major 3 times, Twice in one year, and once the year after. I did this in my first year of uni, One of the greatest choices i made. It is a waste of life to go into a major youre not passionate about, Or you think that it wont benefit you personally in the future. The weird thing is, now that i graduated and started working in my field, i realized that i want to change careers into something else. I have a B.Comm specializing in IT managemeent. B.comm is the best, ITM wasn't a good idea though.

I realized that the skills i Excel at, the ones i developped during my extra curricular activites in uni. are ones which have nothing to do with IT. so now i want to Utilize those skills and develop them.

Have you at any time decided to change fields "after" graduating from a related program?

Nidal There is always a payoff between gainnig business experience in a field before starting a business or starting right ahead. i think whats important is developping the skills you need for your business, while some of those skills will come through working for someone else. Allot of it will come through trial and error and life experiences. What do you guys think about the topic? Is "business experience" necessary?

@Carol, What were those lessons exactly?
@ Ted, I face this problem at the moment, i went into a field and realized that Its not the one for me, I am in it just to get some "professional" experience, I have decided to go into a different field. even though the professional experience has nothing to do whith the businesses i plan to start, and i see no value of such experience. Times are tough, and the luxury of being picky about where i would work does not exist at the moment.

however, surprisingly, Working for someone else has given me time to think about my plans for the future, and research thoroughtly the ideas i want to develop.

I still maintain that have a balance between having some training/experience and jumping right in is required.

Jumping right in can really shoot yourself in the foot in the long run. Take lawyering for example, If after the BAR, you jump right into taking on a defense case (suspend your disbelief for a moment) and fail at it miserably, like you most likely will, that would definitely hurt your reputation and you might never be able to recover from it.

In this example having some experience as part of another firm would almost be a requirement.

In my case, I have some "business experience." If we all think about it we probably have more than we think we do. Learning is another idea. I am learning about business constantly, whether it is as customer, reading a blog, talking with a co-worker or class colleague about a restaurant experience. In reality if we are perceptive we can learn about business and how do things without having "business experience."
