Nicole Leffel If anyone is in the NYC area, you should stop by NYU to check out their 2nd Annual "No Quarter" exhibit of indie games. There are a handful of great games on display for the rest of the month, and it's an opportunity to check out the amazing NYU Game Center! - http://bit.ly/jKlgyy

Nicole Leffel So what does a Game Designer really do all day? - http://bit.ly/gTc5aA I've recently been hired as a full-time Game Designer for social games start-up in NYC, and for the past month I've been guest-blogging with the NYU Game Center about the experience of interning (and moving up) in the industry. I'd be happy to field any questions about the experience!

Nicole Leffel I'm a current Junior at NYU, and I'm really interested in getting into the game industry through a summer internship. The problem I've finding is that there aren't many big game studios -- which are more likely to have established internship programs -- located in NYC. Does anyone have any tips? I'd gladly put in some work at a start-up or a smaller company. Even when I've found companies, it's often a challenge to get the appropriate contact info.

I would imagine the best source for these contacts would be relevant forums such as TIGSource and FlashGameLicense

Thanks Charles!

I know what you mean about "going where the jobs are," and it's definitely something that has been in the back of my mind since I started becoming more serious about entering the games industry. However, since I won't be able to move for a while (still got another semester/year of college to take care of), I figured someplace small in NYC wouldn't be a bad start. I will definitely check out those forums/that link!

Rachel Vincent Hey all. Don't know if any of you are interested or know someone who is interested, but, for the third year in a row, Sony Online Entertainment is offering one female student a scholarship this year to look into the gaming industry as a career. The goal is to encourage more women to get involved in game production and design. It's pretty awesome: a $10,000 scholarship and a 10-week internship with Sony Online Entertainment studios.

You can be going to school pretty much anywhere, but you have to be a legal resident of the US and in an undergraduate program related to video games (like design, animation, programming or visual effects, as examples). The internship is done at one of the Sony studios, which are in San Fran, Austin, Seattle, and Denver.

Not necessarily my top 3, but these are what came to mind the fastest:

1) Prince of Persia - Sands of Time
2) Tales of the Abyss. Decent system for an RPG, and one of the better storylines I've seen.
3) Mirror's Edge
4) Final Fantasy IX (one of the first games I played all the way through, actually)

Look for information specific to where you like, though. And if you get more than $600/year from one client, you may need to have them file a W9 for you and issue you a 1099-MISC at tax time. (Phew, sorry about all the tax forms in this comment!)
