My name is Nico del Castillo. I was born and raised in Pasadena, California.
When I became a teenager, my parents bought me my first drum kit. Dad taught me how to play it, and soon after, I began to follow my older cousin's band to learn the ropes of the Los Angeles underground.
I then started bands of my own, and in order to get the word out about shows, I taught myself how to make flyers with Photoshop and how to hard code web pages with simply a .TXT editor. I taught myself how to book and promote my shows. I became a marketer before I knew what it was.
A lot has happened since those days. I've since been in many different bands. I've learned more musical instruments. I learned music production and live sound engineering. I learned some music theory. And just like my perpetual evolution in music, I also found myself picking up many more computer proficiencies along the way.
Ultimately, nothing stays put for very long. Bands come and go. Software gets updated or outdated. Programming language trends change at the whim of the internet. But it is that kind of constant permutation that excites me. I understand that change might be a challenge to some -- but as I understand it, a challenge is not an obstacle - it is an opportunity.
In a world that is set to change on a regular basis, one only obtains stability with a willingness and capability to adapt to new situations; and fortunately for me, adaptation is second nature - in music, in marketing, in web, and in life.
"To bend like the reed in the wind,
that is the real strength."
- Taoist proverb
I hear it gets pretty windy out there these days.
