I'm a recovering trophy kid, father, writer, researcher, speaker and management consultant. When I'm not changing diapers, playing trucks or failing miserably to manage my fantasy football team, I'm searching for innovative ways to help people work better and live better so they can feel like they're doing something meaningful with their life. I write the Psychology@Work column on BusinessWeek.com and am Vice President for Research & Development at Monarch Leadership. I was formerly the Director of Research & development for TalentSmart, a global think-tank and consultancy serving more than 75% of Fortune 500 companies, and began my career at Accenture working on the mergers of ExxonMobil and BP Amoco. I've worked with the people inside of companies ranging from GE and Coca-Cola, not-for-profits including the American Cancer Society and privately-owned start-ups.
My first book THE IMPULSE FACTOR: An innovative approah to better decision making (Simon and Schuster, 2008) was awarded Best Career Book of 2008 by USA Book News and I've written for a wide range of publications including the San Diego Union-Tribune,Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Leadership Excellence and Talent Management. My research has been covered by outlets like U.S. News & World Report, Psychologies, Marie-Claire, FoxBusiness.com and publications around the world including Globe & Mail (CA), The Times (ZA), Management Today (UK), Daily Express (UK), and Courier News (AU). He has also appeared on NBC-TV, BBC Radio, and Irish Talk Radio.
While at TalentSmart, I authored three original psychological assessments including The Impulse Factor™ Test, which eventually became the heart of my first book. I have a B.A. in psychology & management and a master’s degree in industrial/organizational psychology. I live with my wife and two sons in Minneapolis and am currently working on my next book.
