Cameron Plommer My mom is super depressing about careers... Yesterday she told me that all jobs basically suck and don't expect to like your job. I obviously said that's not true. My belief is that you have to put in a certain amount of effort to have an enjoyable job that fits you. It's easy to not explore yourself enough and build up your skills. But those that do get rewarded with meaningful work. Thoughts?

Jerry Clifford, Word Guru: Such is life. We often must endure the less favorable employments until we find the ultimate gig. May God help you find it.

Rebecca Thorman Just read an article about a woman who told a little white lie in salary negotiation. When she was offered a new job, she said she made $5,000 more at her old job than she actually did. The offered to match her salary, but she said, "I'd like to be making more," and so they came back and said they'd give her $5,000 more, so her new job is $10K more than her old one. $10K is an avg salary jump, but I love this tactic. Do you think it's okay though to say such a lie?

I guess there are varied opinions regarding this matter but in order not to get in trouble this article advised to simply say that you are not comfortable discussing your financial history. That is why you are "negotiating", you want what is financially sound to what you are taking in especially if it is something different from your current job.

Kyle Hendrickson Are you dissatisfied with how unproductive you are online? In an effort to focus myself and become less distraction-prone, I will be making a bit of a social media and technology fast in the immediate future. I am moving into my own place, but have decided against paying for cable and internet in hopes that it will force me to get out of my comfort zone and spend more time with other people...as well as pursue other hobbies such as photography, reading, video production and art. Am I crazy?

The book I'd start with would be "You mean I am not Lazy, Stupid, or Crazy?" by Kate Kelley and Peggy Ramundo. There are so many components to the average owner of AD/HD's lives that seem as though they'd be completely unrelated, but are completely tied in.

Prepare to have your mind blown.

Ain't paying for TV! has been my motto for some time now. 'Course, lving in metro DC, I have access to the major networks: ViaCom, GE, Disney, Fox/NewsCorp, Paramount, and I'm missing at least one here, but I have it. Unfortunately, my new converter box DOES NOT get me any PBS, which is a loss, but not paying for TV. Could be different in more rural settings, just to get networks.

Did once get cable for i'net, but dumped it for DSL, 'cause cost-benefits dictated. I'net was off today in our region and did get a lot done in am. Don't have it on phone, so if no WiFi, etc, I'm out of touch to some degree. Kind of nice to live that "real life" again. Other people? Are you mad?!

Ryan Paugh Hey guys. How about that heat wave? Since the weather is getting nicer and nicer I'm really thinking a lot about putting some Madison Tweet Ups together. I'm thinking that the best way to get started is to create a Brazen/Madison Twitter List. So reply below with your Twitter handle so I can start putting a list of people together.

Rebecca Thorman Just read that bragging about yourself is actually a good thing (http://bit.ly/d3b3jq). Which kind of shuts down all those people who say self-promotion is bad. The study says it's better to brag about yourself instead of someone else, especially for first impressions. Considering, I think we could all be a little more self-confident, I'm all in. What are your thoughts?

Rather I feel that individuals need to do their due diligence whether we're talking about a potential hire, an investment, a job opportunity, etc. It's up to us as individuals and through the web, communities, to sort those who are simply self-promoting from those who are running a con.

It was hard for me to adjust professionally to the US when I moved here after having spent more than 5 years of my career in India. Simply because here, self-praising is something that's a given. It took a huge behavioral shift fopr me personally to start talking about myself, my accomplishments and my worth, without sounding pompous or self-obsessed. I've written about this partly here: http://bit.ly/6mQBRy

I'm personally not against this practice. While having someone endorse me is always a plus, the fact is that you know yourself best. As long as you're honest and fair with yourself, self-promotion, inside or outside a company, is the best way to position yourself.
