TOP IDEA: Rebecca Thorman Safety doesn’t create innovation. But innovation does create new jobs and new opportunities. Innovation creates new markets and cures for illnesses and ideas that make us excited to get up in the morning. You really want to help the economy? Put yourself out there. Risk everything. Do it for you, your family, your friends. We’ll all thank you. http://modite.com/blog/2009/01/07/why-generation-y-should-job-hop-even-i...

I risked all my credit cards to start up a training software company making conversation rehearsal courses (www.talksmith.net). We sold Asperger's Syndrome courses to school districts in North Dakota and Minnesota, and while we are not wealthy, I did get a patent out of it. By the way, I grew up in Silver Spring and was a TV news cameraman on Capitol Hill in the 70's. Innovation means taking risks and going down a path whose end may not be visible. Keep on innnovating, Rebecca!

There are folks exercising a significant lack of maturity in what they post and the friends they invite to see it. I have seen the negative impact on morale and job performance when employees vent their negativity and anger about coworkers that have mutual friends. Terminations for violations are rare and for great reasons that support the company. Documentation to remind employees not to disrupt the business or wrongfully represent themselves as the company is a product of the reach of social media. Carefully crafted policies present minimal interference with social media use and are most likely to result in corrective action as opposed to turnover.

TOP IDEA: Amy Ng I am intrigued by the increased level of parental involvement in Gen-Y job hunting and career development and management. I would love to better understand this new dynamic in the workforce. That, or their need to control their children and their children's life is out of control.
Does anyone teach their children well and let them go?.

I have done local alumni admission interviews, and it always gives me pause when a potential student, not much younger than I am, a student who wants to attend a huge university in one of the largest cities in the world, comes in to interview with a parent, and the parent expects to remain in the room during the interview.

And if she heard about a job lead in her travels, she would write it down and tell me about it. But she never took any kind of specific initiative without my direct knowledge. (Such as calling a manager, or some such madness.)

But I know people in my family who would do that. I have often thought that I have many weaknesses, but none of them entail my mother going to a job interview with or for me. But more importantly, she would not presume to do so on her own.

Cameron Plommer Is there a point when a blog is no longer valuable to a blogger? If a blog is used at least partically as a way to gain employment, at what point does a blogger realize that their blog has given them all the opportunities they need? The reason I ask is because I see bloggers that used to be very active stop producing content or very little (Jun Loayza, Rebecca Thorman, Monica Obrien...). I see blogging as a platform that leads to bigger and better opportunities, what's your take?

Melissa Breau So this weekend my boyfriend competed in a weight-lifting competition and one of the other competitors had driven a significant distance to be there the night before the event, just to end up unable to find a motel room. Any man who is willing to go to such great lengths to have his wife realize her dream needs to be written about and given sainthood.
He's also someone I would want to hire. He's focused, dedicated, nurturing and trustworthy.

To answer your question, I moved to Washington DC from Oklahoma with what I could fit in my car and $300 in my pocket. I lived with one guy who had drug problems and another guy who was blatantly racist. I worked retail and nagged my destination company twice a week to hire me. It took nine months but it worked. I was there nearly 22 years and launched and ran a nationally recognized training program....because I wouldn't take no for an answer. I'm still like that...just older.

Josh Allan Dykstra Recently, I had a great learning moment for how to maximize the RSS feed on my blog (with a special thanks to JenG). I use FeedBurner (which rocks), but the link I'd been using for my RSS feed wasn't working for PC users. To fix, I turned on "SmartFeed" (under Optimize) and then went up to "Edit Feed Details..." to get the FeedBurner address, which I pasted in the appropriate places in my WordPress theme settings. It was that simple, and hopefully will make it much easier for future subscribers!
