Korea); Enter the Void. Egoyan is now making a film about the kids from the Paradise Lost documentaries, a feature apparently not another documentary (there's a third one of those already out). Could be interesting. Also looking forward to Wim Wenders documentary about Pina Bausch (in 3-D no less).

But when a friend request or suggestion came up, I thought, "Eh, we mostly just rubbed each other the wrong way, and I'm friends with most of your friends. Let's assume by now that we've all grown up a bit."

Of course, there are some people I don't want to have contact with for specific reasons.

@Bear, I'm glad you had an opportunity where having your cards handy worked out. I'm not going to say I never have my business cards, I do. For people less technically inclined, it's a good way to exchange information. I will say, though, in my experience over the last year, anywhere where people are bearing a stack of cards means that they don't care what I have to say. They're looking for a professional handout because circumstances haven't been kind to them. Or they want me to Buy, Buy, Buy! Whereas if I go into a situation where the cards aren't part of my wardrobe for the evening, I have found that the tone of the evening is in favor of friendship, not networking. Business cards can be a trigger for you to go into networking-mode, and if that's not what you want, you probably shouldn't throw a stack in your purse. If you can balance it, then good for you!

@Kate, yeah, there are some that I don't friend...What I do love is you don't always have to be friends with everyone, you have a choice.

Kimberly Palmer Do you think we all need to think like entrepreneurs today, regardless of our profession? It's a question that keeps coming up as I talk to people about my book, Generation Earn, which just came out. I think the answer is yes -- even if we're in an office setting, we probably need to think about how to expand the business, stay valuable, & even find new sources of income. I'm wondering what other people in the Brazen community think ... are we all entrepreneurs, whether we want to be or not?

I like the word of "free agent" and "entrepreneur" mentioned above.
In company, we need to have "soldier" that execute and enforce the policy and procedures. However, company would also need leader with entrepreneur spirit to set up new branches in a new country or expand the business. When you are at junior level you need to be a good followers and when you reach senior level you need to be a good strategist formulating business plan, policy and directions.

Neeraj Bhushan Indian journalists are a poor lot today. Hundreds and thousands do not manage even $10 a month. Journalists Unions are DEAD. Even in the Indian capital New Delhi, an estimated 20,000 have no one to turn to. What's your take? I have it here: http://wp.me/p9eNB-SH

Neeraj Bhushan In Indian media organisations there is no one to turn to for redressal of grievances. Trade unions are dead, magazines and news channels do not even issue appointment letters and hundreds and thousands of stringers are not paid even $10 : http://wp.me/p9eNB-SH

Ty Unglebower Last night, 650 voters in the city in which I live (pop. 8,000 or so) elected a 21 year old college student that still lives with his mother to the city council. Many who have written about him say he is very "nice and well spoken" and that he does volunteer work. Others say he can't possibly have enough life experience for this job. But what do you think? In general, can any 21 year college student really have enough life knowledge to be good on a city council?

I certainly think that he could offer a whole new/fresh perspective to the city council. He's not tied into the general mode of thinking that's prevailed there until now. He's got the added bonus of being an 'empty vessel' so to speak; the new concepts, theories and ideas he's studied, he can see innovative ways to implement them. Besides, the age shouldn't be the only thing he's judged on. Some young people I know have more life experience than people twice their age. If he's impressive enough for people to actively vote him into public office, he must have something to offer that the voters feel they need.

I'd consider joining 'green' affiliations and groups in your metro area, or obtaining a LEED AP so you can study up on the strategies of sustainability and energy efficiency. (This is an accreditation that can be relevant for a variety of careers and professionals! Look into it at the USGBC.org website.) Get into the social and professional networks in this industry and get yourself talking to the right people.

Though I haven't had much time to dedicate to it due to school and my day job, I've found the most successful tactic is to just get out there and network your buns off. Most of my work comes from plumbers, HVAC contractors, and real estate agent referrals.
