TOP IDEA: Kate Davids How do you keep up with all the ideas in your head? I'm writing them all down in a notebook but I can't find enough time to write them all. What's your coping mechanism?

Benjamin Paul Schuman When you are currently employed and are going on interviews, is it best to just lie and say you are unemployed? When I tell interviewers that I am looking for a better position that is more challenging, etc (I never say anything truly negative about my current job), I feel that, rather than saying, "OK," and moving on, interviewers take me less seriously and rush through the rest of the interview.

What types of positions are you seeking and what sort of headhunters are you working with? If you've submitted a resume directly to a company and they have requested and interview, they know you are working and have found value in your resume for the job they have open. Even the same for the headhunters. So my guess, unless you have lied on your resume, and have said you are not working at present, you are saying something or giving off some vibe that is turning them off. Seriously. I don't know what that might be, you have to reflect and think about how you present yourself and what you say on interviews. Obviously you are able to get the interviews, so what goes on during those interviews????

Never lie, it will come back to haunt you, and you are always more employable when you have a job than when you don't. These are facts. So without knowing more of your situation, what you're looking for in your next job, and what you're doing now, it's hard to say what's going on with your interviews. Something for you to think about though.

Word I'm hearing is that companies generally are looking at layed off people as damaged goods. I saw an article in the paper the other day about companies actually posting wanted adds with stipulations that the candidate must be currently employed because they have the opinion that unemployed people bring too much baggage. And, from experienced, I was unemployed and shared that on an interview--I think it cost me the job. Just my opinion. But, the bottom line is if you are qualified, the right fit, and those interviewing you "like you" you'll get an offer no matter if you are unemployed or employed.

Neema Syovata Two questions, how do you follow up after a job interview without appearing too aggressive or that you are badgering the person and (2) What is the best way to apply for a job internally?

In college three years ago everyone insisted that I had to send a handwritten note in order to get hired, but at my past two jobs/internships, this hasn't mattered at all because they made hiring decisions so quickly. I have started waiting until the morning after the interview to see if the employer contacts me, with the plan to send an e-mail then so that the interviewer gets it quickly. I think it can also be a good plan to send handwritten notes for all my interviewers after the final round. Thoughts?

If they are still thinking, it will help and stand out. And even if they hire you on a spot, follow up with a written thank you to the person who interviewed you - it will set a good note for starting the new position. I once even got a handwritten note back from the interviewer in response to mine - they had no position available, but wanted me to stay in touch. And they did follow up with an offer later.

Also to what people, specially loved ones may think of our dreams... like for example, being a published author. Not the same think as being a lawyer or a doctor and so forth...

TOP IDEA: Neema Syovata My favorite book is THE ALCHEMIST by Paulo Coelho. I re-read it for the umpteenth time recently. The idea of following your personal legend regardless of how hard it may be. How many of you regret not doing that which you love, that which truly makes you happy in your work and life? Not following your personal legend?

That's a generalization that my own life has proven false. It works sometimes, but not always, for certain.

I like Stacey's point also. You can't always be grateful. But at the same time, you can perhaps redefine what to be grateful about.

Remove your gratitude from your employment situation. If you are unemployed there is nothing in that arena to be grateful for. So don't try. But what about other areas? Family? Friends? A good lunch someday? I don't think our spirits really differentiate what we are being thankful for. Rather I think the idea of being thankful at ANYTHING gives us a bit of a spiritual boost.

So don't try to be thankful for something that is shitty. Save all your gratitude for other stuff. Even the tiny stuff!

@ Alyea and Jon that is my thinking too. the practical experience will better inform my academic focus in Bschool
@ Demetra I think meeting burgeoning AND experienced social entrepreneurs will totally help in this regard. I'm going to start looking for mentors soon
@ Neema, Stanford has an incredible social enterprise arm. That's a dream school destination for sure. But not an immediate priority for me right now.
