Mojgan Fay Any Canadians here participating in Canada Reads? I finally made some bacon ice cream and it was surprisingly inspired by the Jade Peony by Weston Choy: http://www.somethinglemon.com/?p=300.

Mojgan Fay Came back from Oregon Truffle Festival http://www.oregontrufflefestival.com/ and am now going through truffle withdrawal. What do you mean I can't have black truffle shaved on country bread toast with butter and fleur de sel for breakfast?? Sigh. I guess cereal will do. If you are in Oregon, I would highly recommend attending this festival. In 2 days I consumed 17 courses of delicious truffle goodness + wine. Oh, so much wine!

Mojgan Fay I went back to school after having gotten some experience and found that something wonderful happened: what I was doing at work related to school, and what I was learning in school I could apply to my work environment and see first hand what the outcomes where. It was great!!

Mojgan Fay I love it when I read books that influence my life and change my habits. Animal, Vegetable, Miracle has totally changed the way I eat. http://www.somethinglemon.com/?p=122 After my sourdough adventures, am now delving into cheese. Anyone here ever attempted to make cheese? Any tips?

We now belong to 2 organic CSAs (one veg, one animal), and I try to buy as much local as I can, and look to minimally processed/packaged when I can't. My mom used to make a fresh farmers cheese by simply draining greek yogurt for a day or two. I don't eat much dairy, so I haven't done it myself.

Good luck though!

Mojgan Fay Finished Animal, Vegetable, Miracle and can't stop thinking about it. It inspired me to make sourdough bread, make my own cheese, go to farmers markets, and completely change the way I look at food. You can find my review here: http://www.somethinglemon.com/?p=122

Jung Fitzpatrick Thanks for sharing your blog and nutmeg defense Mojgan! I'll dare to use a bit more of it in my cook/baking in 2010. Mojgan Fay Thanks for your reply Luke! I think you are right in that it had grown too long. I just threw out half and fed the other half some water and flour. Will see how it goes.

Jenn Sutherland: RIP Sourdough starter. Better luck next time. Yeasts do demand to be fed on a regular schedule...kind of like my dog. :)

Mojgan Fay I attempted to make sourdough starter. It looked promising: doubled in size, bubbles forming. I got excited! Then when I went to feed it this morning, it had shrunk to half its size. What does this mean? Should I start from scratch again? Is this salvageable? Normal? What happened?

Making starter is something I'd like to do in the next month though.
If it grew for too long, the liquid at the bottom will ferment and kill the yeast.
It might have ran out of sugar and / or water.
My suggestion, Cut it in half, cook half and try to grow the other half.

Try different things out, if you figure out what went wrong let us know. I'd love to hear.

Mojgan Fay Somewhere under the heaviness of the black skirts of Mary Boulton I struggled to breathe. Gil Adamson’s descriptions of the woods and mountains in THE OUTLANDER are lyrical and painterly, but also dark as we follow this self-widowed, almost witch-like, maybe even mad, Mary through the woodland — fleeing. I loved the book for the writing style, the Martha-like behaviour it inspired in me, and the many thoughts of stew! http://www.somethinglemon.com/?p=1
