TOP IDEA: Clara Kuo Millennials and their Families: For those who have passed their quarter life crisis and are edging into the 30s, have you seen you friends having firstborns or going to have firstborns? I see some of my friends having babies and it's a scary thought! Some plan on quitting their jobs or working only part time. I personally can't imagine not working. Could having children negatively affect one's personal brand?

I posted to your blog. When you are ready - you will figure out what is most important to you and how to handle work and family. Remember that you can control it and take charge of the situation. Don't let others tell you what you should do and don't let stigmas control your perceptions.

Rebecca Thorman I was in DC this wkend and was struck by how cool/important the jobs were of those I met - two people worked for the FBI in top-secret positions, many were in the Coast Guard, one girl sold weapons to other countries, several lawyers/finance, another sold jets, and yet another sold helicopters. The quality of conversation as a result seemed better than in other cities. Have you found this to be true in DC? Does a strong gov't sector create strong jobs? Are smart people concentrated there?

Sharalyn Hartwell I just discovered something yesterday and I'm pumped about it. Women's Health magazine has a ton of free workouts you can download to your iPod. I think this is genius. I already bring my iPod to the gym, I don't want to bring paper with exercises jotted down and I definitely don't want to have to think of what to do next. I tried one of them on Saturday and my lower body is still in shock. Anyone else had success doing something like to shake up their gym routine?

Sara Gallagher Rightly or wrongly, as a result of my parents' divorce, I no longer believe that love is enough to sustain a lifelong relationship. To be sure, it's difficult to have a fulfilling relationship without a deep, abiding love for one another. But marriage is also--and you could even say fundamentally--a business partnership. I write about this in this post http://gearsandshifts.com/2010/06/whats_love/ What, if anything, do you think marriage has in common with business?

We were discussing the difference in "marriage" and "civil unions". I lamented the fact that the ideas of religion, love, and sex have more or less taken over what is fundamentally a contract between two people and the government. The fact is two people can love each other and never marry just as easily as two people can marry and never love each other. Where the trouble comes in is when you decide love = marriage or a loveless marriage = divorce.

Rebecca, Miri, and Raquel all have some great thoughts above to help us get started with this, I think.

I LOVE Dan's Autonomy/Mastery/Purpose framework, I just find it feels a little vague on answering that "how" for most people. Engagement always happens at a "local level," meaning at the manager/employee connection. So, much of the "how" gets answered in the context of that relationship. Happy to elaborate if you like. Love this stuff!

Miri McDonald There are so many layers! The first is team/staff which is really back to high school popularity stuff. Then, there's the leadership politics and that's partially the popularity game but your performance comes into it too. The yucky part is that often times a leader has to like you to even look at your performance. Then there's the client politics. Again, sometimes first impression governs the rest of the relationship even if your performance is stellar. What do you think?

Penelope Trunk I find that almost all career questions I get fall into one of two categories: Lacking self-knowledge about how people perceive you or lacking the ability to take a risk to get what you want. I think the first one is actually about office politics. The most important thing about office politics is knowing what other people think of you so you can manage your emotional contribution at work. Do you agree with this? And, do you think everyone thinks they have good self-knowledge even if they don't?

I have been blogging for years and have built a pretty good following averaging just two posts a week. As others have stated, it really all depends on your content and the target audience you wish to reach.

Penelope Trunk I just did something big with my blog ideas: I threw them all out. I have kept a spreadsheet for years of links to ideas I like and ideas for posts I should write. And I used to write all my posts from this sheet. I decided I was actually bogged down by ideas. I decided it's easier to have ideas than to write. Do you ever feel this way? I am wondering if the problem of not blogging is ideas or self-discipline.

Even in the beginning when no one is reading your blog (or just your best friend) it;s hard enough to be raw, honest and flawed. Especially if you're a writer and people expect everything to be word perfect. When you have 50k subscribers it must be worse. Please lead the way for us, help us be brave, show us how to get our ideas out there. After all, the blog posts are just a rough draft for the bestselling book?!
